History was made last year when Réalt na Mara won its category award in its first year of participation in the Louth Local Authorities Primary School Environmental competition. It has been made again this year as this is the first time that a school from Dundalk has scooped the overall Urban Award.

The adjudicators were very impressed by Réalt na Mara's grounds which were totally litter free. There was an atmosphere of cleanliness and cheerfulness throughout the school and a beautiful display of window boxes and hanging baskets. The children's posters and projects were displayed along the corridors.

The school also has a recycling programme and the children have visited the Civic Amenity Site as part of this programme. The school has herb and cactus gardens. The adjudicators were impressed with the slogans and 'green' jokes around the corridors and were very impressed with the highly informed pupils.
