SEPTEMBER is always an exciting time for Tidy Town Committees.
This is the month when the results of the annual competition are announced.
We in Emly were proud that the results showed that for the third year
in a row we were judged the best entrant in Tipperary South. This
year's results showed Emly with 233 marks, Kilsheelan 227 and Rossadrehid
225. Emly was also awarded a special Endeavour Award for effort made
over the years. Congratulations once more to the voluntary workers
who give so many hours of their time to the work of keeping Emly beautiful.
6th SEPTEMBER 2001: A film crew from Kairos Productions
were in Emly today taking shots to be used during the month in their
'thought for the day' slot on R.T.E., television. Locals featured
in the filming were, Jude McCarthy, Maureen Ryan, Catherine Bourke,
Margaret McGrath, John Lonergan, Martin Lonergan and James White.
9th SEPTEMBER : Hurling All-Ireland Sunday was very
special this year for the Tipperary people who travelled to Dublin
to see Tipperary play Galway in the All-Ireland final. The Tipperary
team had its first victory since 1991.
14th SEPTEMBER : A large congregation turned up to Emly
Parish Church for a special Mass on this day of mourning for those
who died so tragically last Tuesday in the United States.
17th SEPTEMBER: Mary Raleigh (McEniry), a native of
Clashdrumsmith, died in St Anthony's Nursing Home, Tipperary. Aged
89, Mary was well known locally for her support and fundraising activities
for the missions. Mary had been predeceased earlier this year by her
brother Paddy. She is bereaved by Bro.Dermot and Sr. Ailbe.
18th SEPTEMBER : The death took place today of John
English, Emly village. John, aged 66 was a native of Cullen but had
for many years had been living in Emly where he ran a very successful
butchering business. Down through the years John had been very active
in local organisations. He is bereaved by his wife Essie, sons, Andrew
and Roger, daughters Cathy, Jeannie and Edel.
OCTOBER 2001: A new youth club is now meeting every
Friday night in the Parish Hall. Founded by a group of parents the
club caters for boys and girls in the under 12 age bracket.
6th OCTOBER: Laura Creamer, Gurteen, Emly celebrated
her 21st birthday with a party for family and friends in the Golden
Thatch. Laura is daughter of Paddy and Eileen Creamer.
18th OCTOBER: The death has taken place of Margaret
Bourke, Bartoose, Emly. Aged 93 years, Margaret had been a patient
in the Deerpark Nursing Home, Shronell. Predeceased by her husband
Paddy, Margaret is bereaved by her son, John and daughter Mary Ellen
who returned from her home in Darwin, Australia for the funeral.
NOVEMBER 2001: The Emly Variety Players are busy rehearsing
for their forthcoming production of the musical 'Oliver.' This year's
cast is a combination of the old experienced campaigners of the stage
and a new generation of young actors and actresses from the locality.
2nd NOVEMBER: The wedding took place in Emly Parish
Church of Eithne McManus, Emly and Cormac McCarthy, Cork. Eithne is
daughter of Sean and Nell McManus.
14th NOVEMBER: The death took place in Birmingham of
Thomas Ryan, formerly Ballycurrane, Emly. His brother Michael is resident
in Ballycurrane.
17th NOVEMBER: The death also took place today of Mary
Mulhall, Main Street, Emly. Mary had been ill for some time and was
a patient in the Regional Hospital, Limerick. She is bereaved by her
husband Des, son, Dermot, daughters, Elizabeth, Breda and Miriam.
6th-9th DECEMBER: The Emly Variety Players went onstage
with their production of 'Oliver'. They played each night to good
and appreciative audiences.

In the title role of Oliver was Eanna Quish. The Artful
Dodger was played by Timmy Hartigan and the evil Bill Sykes by Padraig
Heffernan. Other members of the cast were, Dorothy Ryan-Purcell, Cathal
Hayes, Aoife Walsh, Kerry McAuley, Martin Lonergan, Marie Hennessy,
Oliver Ryan-Purcell, Billy O'Donnell, Thomas O'Brien, Margaret Lonergan,
John Bourke, Josephine Cleary and John Lonergan.
The Workhouse Children and Fagin's Gang were: Nicholas
Ryan-Purcell, Liam O'Donnell, Declan McEniry, J.P.Walsh, John Hennessy,
Mark Davern, Joey Lonergan, Ciaran McAuley, Maire Ring, Mairead Leahy,
Irene Leahy, Sarah Ryan, Margherita Dawson, Rachel Cleary, Tina Burke,
Christina Gleeson, Julie Ann Maher. Special applause and credit was
given each night to the young members of the cast for their outstanding
performances. The scenery was also greatly admired. This was the work
of two local young artists, Michael and Jane Bourke.
Producers of the show were, Nora Hennessy and Fr. Seamus
Rochford. Pianist was Catherine Fitzpatrick. Musical assistant, Marie
Ryan. Set design was the responsibility of Martin Lonergan and Costume
Co-ordination, Nora O'Brien. Lighting was in the hands of Pat. McGrath,
Larry Joy and Anthony O'Brien while stage crew consisted of Denis
Heffernan, Martin Hanrahan and Pat. Ryan. The make-up each night was
supervised by Mary Ring, Mary Heffernan and Catherine Hennessy and
continuity was ensured by PatriciaLeahy, Mary Condon and Sean McManus.
The front of house duties were carried out by Patsy
Hennessy, Esther Lonergan, Adrienne Ring nd Dympna White. It is a
credit to our small community that such a large group of people could
come together to bring such a production to fruition. Congratulations
to all.
10th DECEMBER: The death has taken place of Pat.Grace,
Lisobyhane aged 90 years. Pat who came from a very old family in the
parish, was the last member of his family. He was pre-deceased by
his three sisters.
16th DECEMBER: The annual senior citizen's party took
place today at the Golden Thatch. The party was organised by the committee
of the Emly Tuesday Club.
22nd DECEMBER: The children of Emly Youth Club went
carol singing in the village tonight. Joined by members of the local
parish choir the children raised funds for their own club and the
'Tommy Sullivan' Fund. Tommy Sullivan is from Kilteely but is a pupil
in Emly National School. He is suffering from a rare physical condition.
Funds are being raised in the locality in the hope that it will be
possible to send Tommy to the United States for special treatment.
