THERESA AHEARN T.D: Much regret has been expressed locally at the death of South Tipperary TD Theresa Ahearn. Her death after a long illness, follows the death in March of Michael Ferris another local sitting Dail deputy. Deputy Ahearn who was aged 49 years was first elected to Dail Eireann in 1989 as a Fine Gael candidate. A native of Golden, Theresa Ahearn (nee Scott) lived in Grange Ardfinnan. During her term in the Dail she held a number of front-bench appointments as spokesperson for her party.

Tipperary Minor Football: Even before the end of this year's GAA season, training has started in the various divisions within the county in an effort to put together a panel of players to represent thh county in next year's championship campaign. The following Emly players have been nominated for trial :- Nigel Purcell, Pat Buckley and Donal Condon.

SEPTEMBER 17th 2000:

Our photo shows Denis Heffernan, Chairman of Emly Tidy Town Committee being welcomed back to Emly on Monday evening last after the announcement of the Annual Awards. Denis, Paddy Ryan, Martin Lonergan and Jimmy White attended the awards ceremony in Dublin Castle. Later on Monday evening, a social was held in Byrne's Tavern.

ADJUDICATOR'S COMMENTS: There were two adjudications of the village on June 22nd and August 7th. The adjudicators commented on how well our public buildings were presented (church, school, hall.) "On adjudication days the village looked resplendent ....The new Four Seasons Park was visited ..it is a delightful place.... Emly was practically litter free...Overall, the general impression is one of a village progressing slowly but surely to attaining top marks in the competition ... The Emigrant's Memorial is a clever idea and tastefully created in the columns of stone."

WEST JUNIOR FOOTBALL SEMI-FINAL: Emly 1-5 Rockwell 0-2. This match was played today in Dundrum.

GREETINGS to Mary Ellen McApline (Bourke), Darwin, Australia from all her friends in her native Emly.

SEPTEMBER 10th 2000:

GAA HISTORY: The monumental work of preparing the Emly GAA History is now almost complete. Friday Nov 10th has been set as launch day. Sean McCague, President of the Gaelic Athletic Association will launch the new book at a special function in Emly. The local club are very appreciative of the support given to the project. Publication of a book such as this is a big financial undertaking for a small club and so financial support is very important.

JUDGEMENT DAY: Tomorrow (Monday) is judgement day for all towns and villages entered in the Tidy Town's Competition. Last year Emly was judged as the best village in South Tipperary. The local committee members have again done trojan work and it is pleasing to know that they have been invited to the presentation ceremonies in Dublin tomorrow. This is an indication of an award but we will have to wait until the announcements before knowing the nature of the award.

We will update this page tomorrow.
