CEMETERY MASS: The annual Mass for the dead took place last Wednesday. Due to fear of rain the Mass was transferred to the Parish Church and was followed by a short prayer service in the local cemetery. May all our dead rest in peace.

JULY 2nd 2000:

This picture of Emly village shows some of the new lighting which has recently been installed. All electricity wiring is now underground. The work of re-installing lights meant that there was a lot of digging up of the roads. It will be some time before the road surface is repaired.

CEMETERY MASS: The annual Mass for the dead will take place next Wednesday evening in the local cemetery.

NEW T.D: Seamus Healy, Clonmel was the successful candidate in the South Tipperary by-election. Running as an Independent candidate he surprised everybody by heading the poll. He was elected just ahead of Tom Hayes, F.G. The new deputy made his first appearance in the Dail this week.

MUNSTER HURLING FINAL DAY: All roads lead to Thurles today for the Munster hurling final. After a lapse of nine years the traditional rivals Tipperary and Cork battle it out for the Munster title. It turned out to be a thrilling game with Cork winning by jus 2 points. The score was Cork 0-23 Tipperary 3-12.

JUNE 25th:

JUVENILE FOOTBALL: The Emly under 14 footballers are in the county final of their section as a result of an exciting win against Clonakenny (the Mid-Tipperary champs) in Ballycahill on Friday evening last. Emly proved best in a high scoring game winning 5-9 to 4-6. We wish them the best in the final. We do not yet know who they will be meeting in that final.

RECENT WEDDING: Married recently in Emly church were Joanne Keogh, Rhodus and Eamonn Long, Limerick. Joanne is daughter of Jerry and Peggy Keogh. We wish Joanne and Eamonn every happiness in their marriage.

PREPARATIONS: Weekly meetings are now being held to make the final preparations for the Emly Heritage Week in August. We have been delighted to hear of the numbers of visitors who are coming for the week and we hope to hear from more before August.

JUNE 18th:

BERTIE IN EMLY:

The Taoiseach Bertie Ahern made a flying visit to Emly yesterday morning (Saturday) as part of his campaigning for the South Tipperary by-election. He was accompanied by the Fianna Fail candidate, Barry O'Brien and Ministers of State, Noel Davern and Willie O'Dea.

The election takes place on Thursday next and is expected to be a cliff-hanger.

Our picture shows the Taoiseach with Shirley and Paula Hartigan.

LOURDES: A number of parishioners are at present in Lourdes as part of the Pilgrimage from the Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly.

FOOTBALL: Emly had two teams in the south Limerick Primary schools finals played at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick last Monday. The boys had a comprehensive win in their final while the girls, despite a great performance, had to give best to a strong Ballylanders team.

The boy panel of players were: Cathal Hayes (Captain), James Purcell, Timmy Hartigan, Patrick Hennessy, Robert McEniry, Theo Butler, Thomas Dawson, Eanna Quish, Ned.O'Meara, J.P. Walsh, Mark Davern, Kieran Quinlan, John Hennessy, Declan McEniry, Ciaran McAuley, Joey Lonergan.

The girls panel was: Siobhan McDonagh (Captain), Brid Condon, Aisling O'Donnell, Aisling McGrath, Kerry Mcauley, Lisa Lonergan, Niamh Ryan, Ruth Ryan, Tracey Russell, Sarah McGrath, Laura Hanley, Emma Campbell-Adams, Denise Connolly, Amanda Hanrahan, Tara McDonagh, Christine Buckley.

WEST FINAL: The boys footballing success continued on Thursday night when Emly's under 14 players beat Solohead in the West Tipperary final.

JUNE 11th 2000:

BY-ELECTION: South Tipperary is the focus of great political interest and activity these days as political parties carry out a massive door-to-door canvass on behalf of their candidates in the forthcoming by-election to fill the seat caused by the death of Labour TD Michael Ferris. With efforts being concentrated in one constituency all the parties have been able to send in their political 'big guns.' to push their cause. Even small parishes like Emly are getting full attention. Some commentators maintain that a bad display by the government candidate in this election could hasten a general election in the country.

There was some surprise locally that Lattin councillor Michael McGuire was not selected as the Fianna Fail candidate for the election. At the selection conference he was defeated by Clogheen man Barry O'Brien. The other candidates are Ellen Ferris (Labour) - widow of Michael Ferris and a native of Tipperary town, Senator Tom Hayes (Fine Gael) from Golden, Seamus Healy (Independent) Clonmel, Mary Heney (Christian Solidarity Party), Ballinahinch, Cashel and Raymond McInerney (Natural Law Party). Election day is Thursday 22nd June.

CONGRATULATIONS to Dan Garvey, Emly on his winning of a new car in the Tipperary GAA Draw.

TRAVELLING: While our second level students are busy with their examinations many of our third level students, their exams completed, are heading for foreign lands to work for the summer. Most are heading for America and as I write, I believe that David Hennessy and James White with their friend Jobie Hennessy, Kilteely, are flying to Chicago. (This note is not meant as a general alert!)

JUVENILES: The Emly under 14 footballers have reached the West Tipperary final by defeating Sean Treacy's in the semi-final.

TIPPERARY V CLARE: In this Munster hurling semi-final a young Tipperary team proved too strong for Clare and were victorious 2-19 to 1-14. Clare played with the wind in the first half but the half ended even at 1-8 to 0-11 points for Tipperary. In the second period Tipperary took control with their backs dominating the Clare forwards and with John Leahy and Tommy Dunne starring at centre field the Tipp forwards were given sufficient ball to outscore Clare. Tipperary now play last year's All-Ireland champions Cork in the Munster final.

PADDY FITZPATRICK: Older past pupils of Emly National School will be sad to hear of the death of former teacher Paddy Fitzpatrick. In his 90s he lived in retirement in Lisnagry. May he rest in peace.
