MAY 28th 2000:

THE GOLDEN MILE: A new tidy town type competition is being introduced this year. It is aimed at rural roads and is encouraging residents living on country roads to keep them well. The Golden Mile representing Emly is the road from Tulla to Hartnett's Cross. The residents have done themselves justice in their work on this road.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION: Twelve of our boys and girls will receive their First Holy Communion on Sunday next. The children and their fellow students are busy preparing the ceremony to make the occasion worthy of the parish.

MUNSTER HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP: There was an exodus from Emly this morning of Tipperary supporters heading for Cork for the Munster hurling clash with Waterford. Some of them managed to get their faces on T.V during the live broadcast of the match. The game has just ended and Tipperary were victorious 0-17 to 0-14. It was a hard game on a very windy day which made scoring difficult but Tipperary's 18 wides could have cost them the game. Man of the match was John Leahy from Mullinahone. The next game will be against Clare in the Munster semi-final.

MAY 21st 2000:

'THE MONK WHO VANISHED' is the name of a new novel by English writer Peter Tremayne. What makes it of interest to Emly readers is that it is mainly based in the Monastery of Emly in Celtic times. It is a mystery story set in the 7th century and is one of a series of Celtic novels by the same author. He is obviously well versed in Celtic history and mythology and the book is a very good read. It is published by Headline Book Publishing, London - www.headline.co.uk and is a paperback costing £4-80p.

NEW HOUSES: A recent planning notice for 90 houses in Emly has aroused great curiosity here. Added to this is the rumour of further housing developments in other areas adjacent ot the village. If all these developments come to fruition, the population of Emly village should double in a few years from its current 347 (last census).

TELETHON FUNDRAISER: Last week I did not do justice to the 'People-in-need' telethon fundraisers in Emly. Winnie Ryan tells me that the figure raised was just over £2,000. The Emly effort was part of a national fundraising drive and coordinated on one evening on RTE television. Some of the money raised will be spent on local charities.

AN 'EMLY JOURNAL': It is planned to produce another edition of the 'Emly Journal' to coincide with the 'Failte Week' in August. We invite people to submit articles (no matter how short) for inclusion. Some of you may have an interesting tale to tell. We appeal also to people who may have some photographs of a local interest to give us a loan of them for publication. June 10th will be the deadline for items.

MAY 14th 2000:

MASS: A Mass of preparation for the children who this year are making their First Holy Communion and their families was held in the parish church today. At the beginning of the Mass the children celebrated the Sacrament of Penance. They will receive Holy Communion on Sunday June 4th.

TELETHON: £600 was raised locally in aid of 'People in Need.' On Friday 5th May a number of events were held which included a wheelie bin race, karaoke and a raffle. The wheelie bin winners were Paddy Downey and Mary McGrath, Main Street. Over £5 million was raised nationally for this charity.

GIRL'S FOOTBALL: A very enthusiastic group of young girls in Emly National School have recently taken up gaelic football. They have been doing very well in their games against other schools although they suffered their first defeat in their recent game against Ballylanders.

LEAGUE FINAL: Many from Emly today travelled to Limerick for the final of the National Hurling League between Tipperary and Galway. The travellers were disappointed as Galway were victorious with the score of 2-18 to 2-13. This result will leave many question marks over the Tipp team as they prepare for their Munster championship game against Waterford in two weeks time.

MAY 7th 2000:

The Four Seasons Park: Work on the park is coming to a conclusion after months of very hard endeavour. Planting has now been completed and the final touches will soon be in place. The park (or garden?) is now being much admired. Locals have been coming to view the work and to express their appreciation of the efforts which has given us this great amenity. It is hoped that the park will be a quiet haven for all who visit it.

Accommodation for visitors to the Failte Week (August 4th-11th) can be arranged by contacting the Accommodation Secretary, Emly Failte Week, Emly, Co. Tipperary. 062-57189 or emly@eircom.net All are welcome to visit us but there will be a special welcome for the families of our emigrants whom we are honouring in our Emigrant Monument. There will also be a re-union for past pupils of Emly National School and we would like to see as many as possible of these men and women. The programme for the week can be seen elsewhere on this website.

Hurling: West Tipperary were defeated by Avondhu, Cork 3-10 to 1-13 in the under 16 Munster Final. Three Emly players featured on the West Tipperary team. They were Michael Bourke, Donal Condon and Philip Purcell.

APRIL 30th 2000:

EASTER CEREMONIES: Last week's Easter ceremonies were very well attended in the parish of Emly. During the Easter Saturday night celebrations of the Resurrection we were happy to welcome the newly baptised Ellen Christine Byrne into the Christian community. Ellen Christine is the daughter of Tadhg and May Byrne, Bartoose, Emly.

FATAL ACCIDENT: A tragic car accident took place on Monday morning last on the Emly-Hospital road which resulted in the death of 19year old Thomas Deere, Caherconlish, Co. Limerick. A young man who was a passenger in the car was also injured. His injuries are not life threatening. The accident took place at Ballinaveen, Emly when the car crashed into a wall. No other vehicle was involved. We sympathise with the family of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to the injured boy.

EMIGRANT MONUMENT: Many people from all over the world have been in touch with regard to getting the details of their Emly emigrants inscribed on the monument. Names can be included at any time in the future but if the names are to be inscribed before the Emly Failte Week in August we will need to be informed in the near future.

UNDERGROUND CABLING: The Electricity Supply Board workers last week moved into the village of Emly to continue the work of putting the electricity cables under ground. New lamp standards are being erected and the end result should leave the village looking more attractive.

CONGRATULATIONS to Deirdre White, Galtee View and Mairead Breen, Gurteen, Emly, both of whom celebrated their 21st birthdays last week.

FOOTBALLERS: Our under 12 footballers were beaten by Lattin-Cullen in the West Tipperary semi-final played in Tipperary on Thursday night last.

EASTER SUNDAY 2000:

As we in Emly celebrate the feast of the Resurrection we remember our people all over the world and wish them and all our friends the happiness and fulness of God's grace.

16th April 2000:

PALM SUNDAY marks the beginning of the Easter celebrations here in Emly as in the rest of the Christian world. During the week our parish will celebrate the central feasts of Christianity on Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Saturday night.

Bro. Ailbe William O'Connell: The death recently took place of Bro. O'Connell a native of Glenbane, Lattin. Aged 76 years he was a member of the De La Salle Order. Bro. O'Connell taught in a number of schools including Kilkenny, Castlebar and Dundalk. He was buried in Castletown, Portlaoise.

GREETINGS to Carol Byrne in Chicago. All her friends in Emly send regards.

CLEAN-UP: In preparation for Easter the Tidy Town Committee are organising a clean-up of the village on Tuesday evening next. Volunteers are asked to meet in the church carpark where the teams will be allotted their areas for work.

Another photograph from our local school. Here we have Marie Byrne (left) and Jayne Cregan in studious pose. The school will be closing for the Easter holidays on Wednesday next.

9th April 2000:

Fr. James Perkins: The funeral of Fr. Perkins took place to-day in Drumbane. He had been stationed in our neighbouring parish of Lattin-Cullen from 1969-1995 when he retired. Aged 80 years he was a native of Upperchurch-Drumbane and had spent his last years in retirement there. May he rest in peace.

GAA: Emly under 21 players had mixed luck in the past week. They were beaten by neighbours Lattin-Cullen in football but had a good victory in hurling when they defeated Solohead 3-4 to 1-6.

TUESDAY CLUB members returned home on Friday after a very enjoyable few days in Glendalough, Wicklow. They had beautiful weather during their stay and saw the best of the Wicklow scenery in the Autumn sunshine.

FAILTE WEEK: At a very well attended meeting of Emly Rural Development Assoc., on Thursday evening last the final touches were being put to the programme for the Failte Week. The programme will be posted on the website during the week.

2nd April 2000:

CONGRATULATIONS to Richard Byrne of Emly who has been selected on the Tipperary Minor Football panel. Richard, a goalkeeper, has played in a number of challenge matches for the county.

RESOURCE TEACHER: At the beginning of this school year Emly National School saw the appointment of a resource teacher. With the assistance of some parents a special room has been set up for the use of this teacher.

In recent years the many changes and new emphases in education have been a challenge to teachers and the Board of Management to keep up to date. Each classroom has its computer and for a number of years now the school has been lucky to have the service of an art teacher.

Our picture shows Diarmuid Finnan working at his computer in the senior class.

FAILTE WEEK: I have been trying to get through my backlog of e-mails. However belatedly the messages arrived here it was still now to hear from so many people. Many have been enquiring about the programme of the week. It is now almost completed and I promise to publicise it next week. A special meeting is been held on Thursday night to make final arrangements. Visitors who wish to get accommodation locally are invited to get in touch with us on our Emly e-mail address- emly@eircom.net
