APRIL/AUGUST 2001: UPDATING.

MONDAY 17TH APRIL: Emly was in the news today for the wrong reasons. All the Irish media gave big coverage to the raid on the local parochial house and Emly parish church. The incident happened just before midnight on Easter Sunday night when two masked raiders forced an entry into the parochial house, tied up the parish priest, Fr. Seamus Rochford and escaped with a sum of money which was held in a safe in the church. Fr. Rochford was freed by Gardai about two hours later after a phonecall was made by the raiders to a parishioner who immediately contacted the Gardai.

Easter weekend also marked the death of two parishioners, Donie O'Connell and Denis Beary whowere both from Emly village. Donie and Denis were good friends having an active interest in greyhound sports. Both died after shot illnesses. Their funeral Masses took place in Emly on Easter Monday. Donie is bereaved by his brothers and sisters. Denis is bereaved by his wife Kathleen, his sons and daughters.

21st APRIL: The wedding took place in Emly of Caroline Ryan, daughter of Connie and Mary Ryan, Ballycurrane, Emly and James Martin, Clonakenny, Co. Tipperary.

16th MAY: The death took place today of Sr. Cabrini Riordan, Monemore, Emly. A member of the Presentation Order, Sr. Cabrini had spent many years working in the United States, latterly in California.. She had been ill for a number of years and had returned to Emly some months ago. Sr. Cabrini is bereaved by her mother, brother and sisters.

22nd MAY: The Emly senior citizen's 'Tuesday Club' travelled to Dingle, Co. Kerry for a short holiday. Their stay in Kerry was marked by beautiful weather which added to the enjoyment of the holiday.

30th MAY: The Archbishop, Most Rev. Dermot Clifford today conferred the sacrament of Confirmation on 16 ofour boys and girls, pupils of our local national school.

2nd JUNE: The marriage took place today in Emly Church of Michael Hanley, son of May and the late Michael Hanley, Tulla, Emly and Mary Sheehy, daughter of John and Betty Sheehy, Farran, Emly.

3rd JUNE: Today, Pentecost Sunday was First Communion day in our parish.Our photo shows the group of boys and girls who received the Sacrament with their teacher Mrs Pauline Finnan and Parish Priest, Fr. Rochford.

13th JUNE: The pupils of Emly National School held an end of year concert in the parish hall. The well-attended concert was produced by the drama teacher at the school, Mrs Julie Hogan.

4th JULY: The annual Mass for our dead was celebrated this evening in our local cemetery. As is usual on this occasion, a large number of people attended. Mass was concelebrated by Frs Kennedy and Rochford.

4th JULY: A meeting of parents held this evening at The Golden Thatch decided to set up a committee to organise youth activities in the parish. Maureen Ryan, Galtee View was elected Chairperson, John McGrath, Vice-Chairperson, Sabrina Lynch, Galtee View,Secretary and Josephine Cleary, Tulla, Treasurer.

SPORTING HONOURS:

Patrick Buckley, Chancellorsland, Emly was a member of the victorious Tipperary minor hurling team which won the Munster title by defeating Cork in their home ground on July 1st. Pat was fullback on the team. Tipperary now advances to the All-Ireland series.

Emly u.14 footballers were winners of their division of the Peil na nGael competition held this year at various venues in County Tipperary this Summer. On their way to victory the Emly team had victories over two teams from Tipperary and a team from Derry before beating a team which had come from Canada in the final played at Semple Stadium, Thurles. The Emly captain, William Hennessy, was presented with the winning trophy by Michael Frawley, Chairman of theTipperary Football Board who was very proud to be able to present it to a player from his own parish.

TIDY TOWN: The village of Emly has been looking its best this summer. Most houses in the Main Street have been painted and are looking very attractive. This is adjudication time in the national Tidy Town competition and every effort is being made to keep Emly tidy and clean.

SUMMER CAMPS: This year a number of summer camps have been held in the parish. A new addition this year to youth camp activities was a Music and Fun camp organised by members of theparish choir. This was a very enjoyable experience for our young people who displayed great musical talent and flair.

The Emly Tennis Club also had a tremendously successful camp. In recent years, the club under chairman John O'Brien, has being very active and a recent grant from lottery funds will be used to upgrade their playing facilities

Emly Bord na nOg have been running a summer camp for a number of years. This year's camp must go dowh as one of their most successful. Over 140 boys and girls from Emly and neighbouring parishes attended a week of very well organised activities. Guest visitors during the week included David Kennedy a member of the victorious Tipperary senior hurling team who spent hours signing autographs for the young admirers. Our own Pat Buckley was also present and brought the Munster cup which was a great attraction to our budding hurlers.

25th AUGUST: The wedding took place in Emly Church of Tracy Buckley and Thomas Muldoon. Both the bride and groom were from London. Tracy has strong roots in Emly and Kilross. Her mother is Ann Riordan, Kilross and her father Jimmy is a native of the village of Emly.
