We are currently involved in the D.E.S. Pilot Project of teaching a Foreign Language (French) to the pupils of Fifth and Sixth Standards. In conjunction with this our SIPs project on the use of ICT in the teaching of a foreign language was accepted by the NCTE. The project is being run by the class teachers, in conjunction with the NCTE (National Centre for Technology in Education). During the project, we will be looking at ways in which to enhance learning French by using such tools as e-mail, internet, and of course Language Education cd-roms.
Through our participation in the SIP project we hope to develop contacts with pupils and teachers from a range of counties involved in the learning of French as a foreign language and devise and share strategies for teaching and learning French in a most interesting and enjoyable way. We would also hope to develop links with schools in France, which would give our pupils and staff an insight into the language and culture of the French. To this end we have established communications with "École Primaire St. Charles" in Quimper, Brittany. The pupils e-mail each other on a variety of topics and have even set each other a quiz based on their respective countries. As the year progresses we can already appreciate the benefits of this particular part of the SIP project. It has really brought the French language alive for our pupils.
We have been busy working on our SIP project "The Use of ICT in Teaching Languages" since September. Both 5th and 6th classes are involved in the project. The pupils are really enjoying using the ICT tools to improve their learning experiences.
Recently our French friends sent us a large box containing samples of French food packaging. Here we are examining the contents! |
Another highlight of our SIP project was our Parents' Dissemination Night. Our pupils mounted a very colouful display for their parents to show them the kind of work they are undertaking in the project. Here's one of the notice boards. |
