Lesson 1

The Postal System
.

Aims

  1. The children will identify methods of communication.

  2. The children will understand the workings of the postal system.

  3. The children will recognise E-mail as an effective and efficient means of communication.

  4. The children will identify the main elements of an E-mail.

Materials : Letters, postman's hat, home addressess, e-mail addresses, large blank e-mail form.

Content / Methodology

The teacher will initiate class discussion on the means of communication e.g. telephone. letter, fax, e-mail, speech and the effectiveness of each.

Discussion on and demonstration of the workings of the postal system. Individual children will post letters addressed to classmates in the classroom post office. An appointed "postman/postwoman" will then deliver them to the appropriate children. ** LD children could act as post person and be asked about letters or cards they received, their favourite person to send a letter to..**

Discussion on the need for accuracy in the addresses and the efficiency of the postal system.

Display of E-Mail and discussion of the children experience of same. Discussion of requirements for sending an e-mail.

Children will examine and read hard copies of e-mails. The teacher will highlight the TO and SUBJECT boxes.

The E-mails will be displayed in classroom.

Lesson 2

Recognising Outlook Express
.

Aims

  1. The children will identify e-mail as an effective and efficient means of communication.

  2. The children will be able to launch Outlook Express

  3. The children will be able to receive and open E-mail messages.

Materials : Computers-on-line, several e-mail in the in-box from a variety of sources.

Content / Methodology

The chilren will recall methods of communication and discuss the benefits of E-Mail.

The teacher will deaw the children's attention to the Outlook Express icaon and elicit from the children the appropriateness of the symbol.

Individual children will click on this symbol to launch Outlook Express.

Discussion on the Outlook Express Window and the services available.-

Children's attention will be drawn to the Inbox / Outbox and identification of mail contained in each.

Individual children will click on the Inbox. Discussion of the list of mail contained therein - noting date, sender and subject.

Individual will read the E-mails. Discussion on the TO and SUBJECT boxes.

Lesson 3

Composing and Sending an E-mail.
.

Aims

 

  1. The children will revise the main elements of the previous lesson.

  2. The children will check their inbox for new mail.

  3. The children will learn to compose and send an E-mail.

Materials : Computers on line, E-mail addresses, E-mail in the inbox.

Content / Methodology

Individual children will recall by demonstrating the launch of Outlook Express.

Individual children will open the Inbox. Children’s attention is drawn to the bold text, unopened envelopes and subject headings. The connection with the server should be terminated.

Individual children will read and print E mails.

Individual children will click on the “Compose a message” icon. Discussion of the window will follow – “To” and “Subject” boxes.

Individual children will type in E-mail addresses with the teacher highlighting the importance of accuracy. The “Subject” box gives the recipient some idea of the subject of the message.

Children collectively compose a short message.

Individual child clicks on the send button. Teacher draws the children’s attention to the envelope icon.

Children encouraged to note where the message is being stored – “Outbox”.

Individual child clicks the “send and receive” button to forward the mail.

Follow Up Activities

During the forthcoming week individual children compose and send E mails.

Children also check for new mail, print and display them. 

Lesson 4

Replying to an E-mail
.

Aims

 

  1. Children will revise the main elements of the previous lesson.

  2. Children will compose and send E-mail.

  3. Children will be able to reply to an E-mail using the "Reply to" facility.

Materials : Computers-on-line, E-mail addresses, E-mails in the Inbox.

Content / Methology

Individual children will launch Outlook Express.

Children will note if Inbox contains mail and these messages will be opened and read - highlighing the bold text, unopened envelope and subject matter.

Indivividual children will send a message composed by the class and send it.

Teacher will draw the children's attention to the "Reply To" button. A message from the Inbox is selected and using the "Reply To" button, children will compose a reply. They will note the completion of the "To" box.

Individual children will send the message. The class will not where the message is stored and the need to go on line to send the message.

Children's attention will be drawn to the Inbox / Out Box and the identification of mail contained in each.

Individual children will click on the Inbox. Discussion of the list of mail contained therein - noting date, sender and subject.

Individual children will click on a selected E-mail to open it, noting it being highlighted each time.

Individual children will read the E-mails.

Follow Up Activities

Drawing a picture of the E-mail window, and colouring the various boxes.

Composing e-mails using the homemade letter frame.
