Lesson 1 :

Travelling to France
.

Aims

  1. The children will discuss and reflect on their own life experiences of France and the French.

  2. The children will identify the main physical features of France.

  3. The children will identify means of transport to and within France.

  4. The children will work collaboratively to identify information necessary for inclusion in a handout “Travelling to France”.

Map of France depicting physical features unnamed.
Atlases
Scanner
Travel brochures indicating air, sea and rail transport to France.
Blackboard.

Content / Methodology
  1. The teacher will ask the children to write down the first 10 words / phrases they think of when they hear the word France / French.
  2. Working in pairs the children will discuss their statements.  The pairs will give feedback to the class on their discussion and class discussion will be encouraged.
  3. Children will be presented with a map of France showing the principal physical features un-named – cities, mountains, rivers, bays and towns.  Using their atlases and working in pairs, they will label the map.  Class discussion of their work will follow.
  4. Teacher will initiate class discussion on means of travel to France and within France.  Children will have an opportunity to browse travel brochures and atlases to identify ports, airports and railway links.  This work will be completed in pairs or larger groups.
  5. Teacher will then ask the children to work in groups to decide on what information they feel is necessary for inclusion in a handbook “Travelling to France”
  6. Group spokespersons will give feedback to the class on their decisions.  These will be listed on blackboard and categorised.
Follow Up Activities

During the forthcoming week the children will work collaboratively in their groups to design a section of the handout “Travelling to France”.   This will possibly include information on ports, airports, rail transport, and a map of France depicting the principal physical features.  They will be encouraged to use the scanner to scan maps of France and also to use the computer skills learned to date – word-processing, desk top publishing, data based.  Work completed by each group will be saved in an appropriate file ready for inclusion in the final document.

Lesson 2 :

Food in France
.

Aims

  1. The children will gain an insight into French culture and lifestyle.
  2. The children will learn the French vocabulary for particular foods.
  3. The children will work collaboratively to identify items from the French food theme, which might be included in their handout “Travelling to France”.
  4. The children will recognise and appreciate the specialty foods of the various French regions.

  1. Teacher will initiate class discussion on the children’s experiences of French food.
  2. Insight will be given by the teacher and children who have visited France into French mealtimes and traditions

Each group will work co-operatively to decide what suitable computer applications will be used to present their work.  They will be encouraged to use the scanner to scan pictures of Food and the digital camera to take photographs of same.

Group spokesperson will give feedback to the class on what their group plans to during the forthcoming week.

Follow Up Activities

During the forthcoming week, groups will implement their planned work.  All work will be saved in the group file for inclusion in the final document.

Lesson 3 :

Tourist Resorts

Aims

  1. The children will identify the popular tourist destinations in France.

  2. The children will appreciate the characteristics of the popular tourist areas within France.

  3. The children will work collaboratively to identify key elements of the regions to be included in their document “Travelling to France.”

  4. The children will work collaboratively to identify the computer skills and peripherals, which they will use in computing their document.

  5. The children will learn to use the digital camera.

Content / Methodology

The teacher will initiate discussion on children’s experiences of holidays in France.

Destinations will be listed on the blackboard and these will be categorized into regions; the popular ones being

Cote d’Azur

Brittany/Normandy

The Alps

Paris/ Ile de France

Provence

Pyrenees

Each area will be discussed by the teacher and class under the following headings;

main attractions,   people,    lifestyle/culture

(Paris omitted in this discussion as included in lesson 4.)
The teacher will draw children’s attention to the web sites for sourcing further information on these areas. Appropriate French vocabulary will be given to the children as the lesson proceeds.
Working collaboratively in their groups the children will identify elements of the discussion, which they will include in their document.
They will also decide what computer skills and peripherals will be used in their presentation.
Group spokespersons will report to the class on decisions reached by their group regarding their presentations.
Teacher will demonstrate the use of the digital camera to the class. Opportunity will be given for a member of each group to practice the use of camera under the teacher’s supervision.

Follow Up Activities

During the following week the children working in their groups will implement the decisions they reached on the production of their document “Travelling to France.”

Lesson 4 :

Resorts in France
.

Aims

  1. The children will appreciate Paris as an interanational city and popular tourist destination.

  2. The children will identify popular sights for the tourist in Paris.

  3. The children will work collaboratively in their groups to select items to be included in their document "Travelling to France".

  4. The children will work collaboratively to identify the computer skills and applications which they will use in the presenation of the document "Travelling to France".

Materials : Map of France, Blackboard, Computers-on-line, CD-rom "Picture Box on Paris and Things French", URLs.

PARIS

To the French their country is divided into two parts - Paris and the 'Province' which is everywhere else.
1798 - The French Revolution
During the nineteenth century Paris attracted artists from Sisley to Brancusi and writers from Wilde to Hemmingway.
Notre Dame Cathredral : It was here that Joan of Arc was tried and condemned. It's construction spanned 200 years.
Champs - Elysees : The most glamorous avenue in Paris - expensive mansions, expensive shops, grandious monuments.
Arc de Triomphe : Commissioned by Napoleon in 1805 to commemorate his victories. Under the Arc is the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Bastille : Famous royal fortress and prison
Eiffel Tower : Designed to be the tallest structure in the world, the tower was conceived as a monument to engineering and industry. Constructed 1887 - 1889. It gives unparalleled views of Paris.
Louvre : Former residence of French Monarchy, now galleries and museums housing the "Mona Lisa".

 

Content / Methodology

The teacher will initaite discussion with the children on their experiences of Paris - video, books, film.
The teacher will elicit from the children the popular tourist sights of Paris. These will be listed on the blackboard.
The teacher will give the children some background information/history of Paris.
The following websites; www.paris.org and www.francetourism.com and the CD-rom "Picture Box on Paris" will be explored, the teacher highlighting sections which may be of use to the children in compiling their document "Travelling to France".
Children will work in their groups to decide what elements of the "Paris" theme will be included and what computer applications/peripherals will be used in their presenations.

Follow Up Activities

During the following week the children will work on this final section of their document "Travelling to France".
