Evaluation – General Comments

This module was successful in many regards.  The theme of the Module appealed to all the children.  Their word processing, E-mail and w.w.w. skills were consolidated through the various activities.  Senior children were interested in discovering the customs and traditions of their European neighbours while the younger children were most excited about their contact with Santa!  His prompt reply generated great excitement.  However, due to the usual hectic schedule in schools prior to Christmas, it was very difficult to realise all planned activities. (Teacher 1).

Having gone through the projected lessons for this Module with the staff involved, this Module proved to be popular with both staff and pupils.  Given the time of year, the staff felt that devoting all the work to the topic of Christmas allowed for learning through fun activities.

The first lesson (creating a Christmas card) produced some lovely work.  However, because our school does not have DTP software, I was obliged to first of all find suitable clipart on the Internet, download it on to a floppy and then load this clipart on to the individual class computers.  This proved to be very time consuming, but worth it!  We then had to use MS Word to create the cards.  This also posed problems, as the clipart was inclined to ‘jump’ around the page quite a lot.  However, the pupils really enjoyed seeing their end product in print and staff felt this was a worthwhile activity.

The following lessons were less hassle, but use of the Internet to look at the Christmas Websites proved very time consuming.  One p.c. to thirty pupils is really not practical.  Overall, I felt that this particular Module was most enjoyable.  It was certainly worth doing.  The children’s (Christmas) language awareness and cultural awareness were very much improved.
