In 1798 a rebellion took place in Ireland but was quickly confined to the South East and County Wexford in particular. It was in this county that the rebels were most successful and as a consequence suffered most in the battles and aftermath. The loss of life in Co. Wexford is estimated at approximately 20,000, which is enormous when compared to the loss of life of the French revolution which greatly inspired the Irish bid for a democracy of their own.
