Future need for more Agricultural Graduates

The current problem with animal diseases have not diminished the need for agricultural graduates, in fact quite the opposite according to Professor Joseph Mannion, dean of the faculty of Agriculture in UDC.

"BSE and Foot and Mouth only emphasise the need for highly qualified scientist to tackle issues of food safety and quality, to work on improving animals resistance to disease and ensure that animals are produced in a safe way".

He says prospective bachelor of \agriculture science students should be interested in science, nature and in environment around them. He warns, however, that they are not likely to find a job that allows them to be outdoors fulltime ( only 5 % of graduates become farmers, for instance). Technical ability can only take you so far, he says, a successful career also involves willingness to become involved in management.

The degree requires a minimum D3 in one science subject, though a second one is an advantage.
