St. Caillin’s hold off spirited Mohill fightback

SCORE BOARD

St. Caillin’s ......... 1-11 Mohill ............... 1-9

Fenagh looked as if they were coasting to victory when they held a commanding 1-5 to 0-1 lead after just twenty-three minutes. But the young Mohill side fought back in some style and looked to have gained the upper hand when they drew level with just over five minutes to play.

But points from Enda McKiernan and Peter Guckian saw a more streetwise Fenagh gain the place in the final. Indeed, it has been quite an excellent year for the Fenagh men as they suffered only two defeats during the year, one in the League and one in the championship, and next Sunday’s Final against Glencar/Manor could be the chance for them to end their season on a high note.

For Mohill, it will be something of a disappointment but with so many of their team eligible for the U-21 grade, they

still have the chance to lift some silverware. However, they have made considerable progress in a year that saw them fighting against relegation last year and now contesting the League Semi-Finals.

St. Caillin’s were by no means flattered by their early seven point lead as they were on top in all sectors of the field. Mohill drew first blood with a well struck Peter Gaffey point in the third minute before a rampant Fenagh shot an unanswered 1-5.

The points came from Ciaran Duignan, Gerry Butler, Dessie Bohan, Enda McKiernan and centre-back Francis Duignan while McKiernan scrambled home a goal for the Fenagh men. Mohill suddenly got their act together and finished the half strongly with points from a Peter Gaffey free and a fine

Derek Canning effort to give them some hope for the second half, Fenagh leading 1-5 to 0-3 at the interval.

On the resumption, James Gaffey narrowed the gap to a goal but Fenagh responded with points from Butler and Niall Flynn. Mohill, however, were handed a lifeline when George Dugdale rammed the ball to the net after Paul Gill had parried a James Gaffey shot following a good eighth minute Mohill move.

Ciaran Duignan responded with a point but Dugdale replied for the Mohill men. Derek Canning and Ciaran Duignan swapped points but Mohill hit a purple patch and seemed to take control of the game when they drew level by the twenty-fourth minute thanks to scores from James Gaffey, Ray O’Carolan and Pat O’Toole.

But just as it appeared that

Mohill were in the driving seat, Fenagh rallied and two later points from Enda McKiernan and Peter Guckian saw them run out two point winners.
