The first round of the championship was against Cloone in Gortletteragh and even while taking it ran up what must be a record score for the club in championship football, 13-12 to no score - a fifty one point win, with "The Terrible Twins" of Michael Tighe and Padraig Leyden scoring 6-6 between them. The semi-final was against Ballinamore and after the previous year's defeat there was no hint of complacency. This was reflected in the final score, Fenagh 3-12, Ballinamore 0-4 with Peter Farrell the star at midfield.

Fenagh's opponents in the final were Aughawillan and having already dropped a point to them in the league, nothing was left to chance. There was total commitment to training from all the panel. This was helped considerably by the fact that practically all the team were home based. A measure of this dedication can be gauged from the fact that team captain, Paddy Gaffney, took his fortnight's annual holiday to come home and train with the team.

Aughawillan opened with a point but Fenagh hit back and once Padraig Leyden had the ball in the Aughawillan net after three minutes, they never looked back. Leading by 1-3 t0 0-2 at half-time, the hard training showed up in the second half, running Aughawillan off their feet. Fenagh's second goal in the opening minutes of the second half was a thundering shot from John Ellis. This effectively finished the game and at the final whistle the score read Fenagh 2-8, Aughawillan 0-3.

Unfortunately, Hugh Murray, who was substituted during the second half, had his leg broken. It took two days to realise this - perhaps the effect of celebrations on the human system! After the match the team captain, Paddy Gaffney, was presented with the Ellis cup.
