St. Farnan of Downings, Co. Kildare
According to Canon O'Hanlon in his Lives of the Irish Saints "a tradition of high and reliable antiquity states that the site of the old church at Dowlings was once the cell of St. Farnan, and immediately adjacent. The saints well bubbles up in the valley of Downings. It is said that in his day, like all saints of our own time, he battled with doubt and uncertainty against drunkeness. Activated by the popular belief, St. Farnan blessed the well at Downings and called it The Well of Sobriety, saying that 'whosoever drank of its water should never again relish the waters of intemperance'. No other details or traditions survive regarding St. Farnan.
St. Farnan's Post Primary School
St. Farnan's is managed by Co. Kildare VEC and has served the community since September 1941. The original school building opened in 1941. The flat roofed extension was opened in 1971. The next phase was completed n 1989 and officially opened by Minister Mary O'Rourke T.D. in September, 1991. A further extension has been sanctioned and is now at the planning stage. It will provide enhanced facilities for Science, Art, Information Technology, Music and Drama plus ancillary services.
In 1980 Prosperous celebrated the bicentenary of its founding by Robert Brooke. Prosperous was founded from industrial motives in 1780, the industry in question was cotton. The name of the settlement could only have been the product of a dream. The industrial venture at Prosperous failed after a short period. Prosperous declined to such an extent as to be described by Lewis in 1837 as 'little more than a pile of ruins' it's situation 'in a low and marshy spot, surrounded by bogs and without water power.....'.
The village has retained some qualities of rural Irish townscape which are in themselves becoming rare. If Prosperous failed as a textile centre it has survived as a service centre, providing the educational, social and shopping needs of its agricultural neighbourhood.

St Farnan's Boys Gaelic Football 1998/1999
School Teams take part in both Kildare and Leinster competitions at U-14, U-16 and Senior level.
Senior Level: The senior team won the Kildare championship beating Rathangan P.P. in the final. Excellent displays by Tommy Coogan, Shane Casey , Brian Dunne, Joe Behan and Jason Mooney ensured a narrow 2 point win in a score of 1-9 to 0-10
The U-16 team were beaten by Rathangan P.P. in the semi-final of the Kildare championship. Good displays by Gary Judge, Jonathan Smith and Peter Dunne were not enough to stop an excellent Rathangan team who went on to win the final easily.
The U-14 team played in the Leinster competition but did not qualify for their group. The new team manager is Louise Kearns taking over from Eugene Mulligan who has since left St. Farnan's to fry smaller fish (Eugene has taken up Primary teaching).
Louise again features as coach for the Girl's Gaelic Football team which started up again this year after a break of four years. Our senior team captained by Caroline Walsh have competed this year in the Leinster Senior C League in which we qualified for our group, competing against Blessington and Castleknock, but unfortunately being defeated by a strong Dundalk side.
Girls basketball in the school is run by Sheila Mitchell and Sara Gorman. We had two teams for the league, a junior and minor team. Our junior team beat Clane and our minor team defeated Confey but were unable to sustain a winning streak to remain in the league.
Tony Early has recently started training an U-14 soccer team who will hopefully be entered in a school league for next year.
