School Ethos and Mission

In the traditions of Catholic education, strong emphasis is placed on moral and religious training. The aim of our school is to produce young men and women versed in their religion as well as in their secular knowledge.
School discipline is firm without ever being harsh. Certain standards of behaviour and general conduct are expected from all the pupils in the school.
Fr.Tadhg FitzgeraldThe headmaster and staff regard it as their duty to offer all the advantages of the best available teaching methods that can be found anywhere to the children entrusted to their care. The school also regards it as part of its duty to assist in placing its pupils in suitable employment, or where appropriate in further education or training.
Children who are referred to St. Ita's & St. Joseph's School are, by and large, those who have the potential to lead independent lives if given a specialised form of education over a number of years. Time is of the essence in getting to grips with such children's learning problems and it is important, therefore, that they are referred for a psychological assessment without delay if they are ultimately to achieve at their potential. We believe that special education is a great asset permitting the re-habilitation of many children who might otherwise founder.

One last observation: parents/guardians, for one reason or another, are sometimes reluctant to accept that their child has a learning problem even when the facts are seemingly incontrovertible. Sometimes, years go by before the reality finally dawns on them. By that time, their child maybe 10 - 12 years old and have developed a more intractable learning/behavioural problem and may not be amenable to normal remediation.
