Athenry De Wetts 1906
ATHENRY DE WETTS

In 1900 local teams did not take part in the hurling and football championships but the next year saw the beginning of a glorious period in the history of the games in the parish. Athenry De Wetts won three Senior football championship titles with Derrydonnall winning county Junior and Senior Hurling Titles.

The De Wetts were so named to honour the hundreds of Connaught men who fought under General De Wett against the British in the South African Boer War.
