STOKANE NATIONAL SCHOOL

ABOUT THIS SITE

The pupils, teachers, and everybody concerned with this site wish to acknowledge the support of Eircom -- Ireland's telecommunications people -- for sponsoring web space to Irish Primary and Secondary Schools, as part of the Information Age Schools initiative in conjunction with the National Council for Technology in Education (NCTE). In 2006, the school recieved the Digital Schools Award in recognition of its integration of technology into everyday classroom teaching and learning.

A special word of thanks to Pat Sweeney of the Stokane Parents' Association for all the technical assistance provided over the years. Stokane N.S. was involved since the early nineties in research in the area of electronic telecommunication in conjunction with Telecom Éireann. Eight schools were chosen in the Ballina area initially, and Telix, a DOS-based software was used. Later on, Wildcat! Navigator was distributed to the schools, and this Windows-based software was a major innovation. Microsoft (Ireland) provided software and internet access to schools in the mid-nineties, but it was the Information Age Schools Initiative (NCTE, DES and Telecom Éireann) which really brought the internet into schools in Ireland in 1998.

To date we have received very favourable comment on the pages appearing on the site, and we hope this continues.
