Super Strokestown shock
favourites (Irish
independant)
STROKESTOWN 2-11 ; ST BRIGID'S
0-11
SUPER Strokestown turned
in a brilliant second-half display to overcome
pre-match favourites St Brigid's and win their
first Roscommon SFC title since 1992 before a
crowd of 4,000 at Dr Hyde Park yesterday.
Brigid's held the
upperhand for most of the first half and with
Brendan O'Brien and John Tiernan in great form,
the Kiltoom side led by 0-7 to 0-4 at
half-time.
It could have been
closer though, as Brigid's 'keeper Shane Curran
made a breathtaking point blank save from Luke
Dolan in the 20th minute.
With youngster Derek
Hagan lording it at midfield, Strokestown came
roaring back into contention on the
resumption.
Kevin J Dolan's third
minute goal levelled matters after a mixup in
the Brigid's defence and while the favourites
drew level twice subsequently, Strokestown
finished stronger.
Strokestown sealed their
victory when Conor Silke grabbed their second
goal in the 60th minute and Brigid's bad day was
compounded when corner-forward David O'Connor
was sent off seven minutes into injury-time.
Best for Strokestown
were Damien Cassidy, Damien Donlon, Morgan
Beirne, man of the match Hagan and veteran Luke
Dolan. For Brigid's, Basil Mannion, John
Tiernan, Tony Kilcommins, Brendan O'Brien and
John Mannion were best.
