Man charged with Kilmainham murder

A man is due to appear before Kilmainham Court in early February in connection with the murder of a Liberties man.

The dead man was named by gardaí as Kenneth Foley, 44, of Tir Connell Road, Inchicore, but he originally hailed from the Crumlin/Drimnagh area. His body was found in the outside stairwell of Jamestown Court, an elderly persons’ housing development at 5am on January 15, by a local resident.

The resident, who was returning to his flat in the complex, also reported hearing a disturbance outside his flat at 1:30am. Another man has been charged with an assault in connection with the incident. The murder has left the elderly residents of a senior citizens’ complex fearful to leave their homes. It was the second murder in the area since Christmas.

Youth festival for Liberties

WHITEFRIAR Community Centre, Aungier Street, hosts what promises to be an energy-sapping Community Youth Festival 1999, from February 19-21.

The opening ceremony for the festival, the first of its kind for some years, will be performed by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Senator Joe Doyle.

Weekend activities include almost every sport possible, fancy dress party disco, face painting, talent show, barbeque, arts and crafts, cookery, dancing and a laser show. Most of the weekend’s activities will take place in the Whitefriar Community Centre, but some events are to be hosted by the neighbouring YMCA centre, by the Clongowes Youth Club in Coppinger Row and by DIT, Kevin Street.

The festival is to be staffed by volunteers from Whitefriar, the YMCA, Clongowes, the My World youth group, St Vincent de Paul and Aungier Celtic football club.

Around 30 helpers have already been enlisted, but festival spokesman Alan Healy wants anyone else who would like to get involved in to contact him, telephone 4751452.

Mayor launches homeless initiative

THE Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Senator Joe Doyle, launched a new training and information pack for people working with the homeless, at Wood Quay on Wednesday, February 3.

The pack was produced by Trust, a Bride Road-based befriending, social and health service for people who are homeless, in association with Dublin Corporation.

City manager John Fitzgerald also attended, as did representatives of numerous organisations dedicated to helping the homeless and with housing justice.
