Galway Film Fleadh

Over 60 features will be screened over six days with new Irish features prominent in the the programme.

There is an exciting programme of new Irish documentaries including Shimmy Marcus' powerful and exciting work Aidan Walshe - Master of the Universe, Sé Merry Doyle's Alive, Alive O and Peter Canning's Patrick Carey - Film-Maker. This timely film celebrates the life and work of the Dublin born cameraman and film-maker who died in 1993.

Nature is the main theme of this year's Fleadh. As part of this, the Fleadh will show two programmes of Paddy Carey's exceptional films including Yeat's Country and Waves. Also included is the Greek film Earth and Water, the Iranian The Colour of Paradise and Terence Malick's classic Days of Heaven.

Films from Iran, Holland, France, Germany, Greece, UK and the USA make up a diverse and stimulating international programme. Included is the European premiere of the charming American film Goat on Fire and Long Night's Journey Into Day, which examines the stories of human suffering behind the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in South Africa.

Set in the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll underground of a very modern Dublin, Jack Flinter is a small time drug dealer who gets caught in a deal that is too big for him - his womanising lands him in trouble with his girlfriend and his junkie partner lands him in hot water with the local crime boss. Flick is effortlessly stylish in its milieu of the pubs, clubs and streets of Dublin. Friday 14 July 7pm

Saltwater

Galway Film Fleadh - Saltwater

The eagerly awaited feature directorial debut of Conor McPherson (writer of I Went Down). This will be its Irish premiere after its successful screening at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year. Set in an Irish out-of-season seaside resort, it revolves around the Beneventi family who are struggling to make a living from their fish and chip shop. An hilarious comedy with dark overtones.

Country

Starring Gary Lydon, Lisa Harrow and with an exceptional performance by newcomer Dean Pritchard, Country centres on three men: Frank Murphy and his two sons. When Frank's sister-in-law returns from London she brings a new warmth and energy into the house. Their evolving relationship takes place against the background of fierce tensions between the locals and a group of Travellers.

A tense and powerful drama and visually one of the strongest Irish features of recent years, Donal Gilligan's cinematography almost becoming a character in the film.

Scullion

Scullion

Between 1975 and 1985, Scullion were one of the biggest and most innovative Irish folk bands. Now the legendary Sonny Condell and Philip King are getting together for a once-off re-union tour and album entitled Eyelids into Snow. Playing some of their classic hits, such as Down in the City and new material, this will be a night to remember. They will be joined for the concert by Robbie Overson and Garvan Gallagher.

Founded in 1993 Increpación have successfully fused contemporary dance with traditional Spanish and Flamenco styles. F.G.L. (oidos de Lorca) - Lorca's ears - is a tributal suite to Spain's poet laureate, playwright and musician, Federico Garcia Lorca.

A tribute to the Beats

Jazz vocalist Kurt Elling and his quartet join actors Tim Hopper and John Mahoney in this critical tribute to Beat culture. The event will juxtapose poetry with critical points of view on the Beat culture, involving recorded voices of Beat writers - including Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac - projected images of the photography of Ginsberg, musical selections sung by Elling and selections of work by Beat writers read by the Steppenwolf actors.

Coming to Galway direct from its Chicago premiere and starring Tony Award winner John Mahoney in the role of James Tyrone, the Irish Repertory of Chicago's production of Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece is a powerful theatrical experience.

While this is a play about an American family it is rooted deeply in Ireland: exiled from their native land the characters are rootless, restless and dispossessed.
