Lovers - Winners and Losers by Brian Friel
Friel's classic play about disenchanted love is set in Donegal in the
1960's. The play centres around two separate stories of love. The first,
Winners, tells the romantic tale of Joe and Mags, two teenagers whose
innocent love for each other has been complicated by pregnancy and their
forthcoming wedding. Friel examines their relationship against the
background of an insular Irish society.
In the second tale, the lovers are older but their love is no less
passionate. Their devotion however is plagued by the constant interfering
of a jealous mother. Taken as a whole the two acts combine into a work
which examines love through hilarious comedy and emotional tragedy.
Directed by Andrew Flynn, set design is by Catherine Maloney, lighting
design by Mark Hill and sound design by Jack Cawley.
