Travel Directions to Mohill

Where are we?

Map:Towns and Villages
of South Leitrim

The map at left will give you a rough indication where we are.  The map at right shows the towns and villages of South County Leitrim.  A nice simple map of Leitrim is here, also here. An alternative map of Leitrim (which is clickable) is here.  This second map is from Leitrim Tourism. Very detailed historical maps (from the 1800s) can be found on here

Check here for an interactive map to navigate around Ireland - enter Mohill (town), select Leitrim county, hit [GET MAP] and you can zoom in pan etc. to find the way to Mohill.

If you're planning to spend a good bit of time in the town, then get hold of the Ordinance Survey maps, sheets: 33 and 34.  Mohill is at the right hand side of sheet 33.  If you are abroad, they can be ordered on-line.(they are called the Discovery series), otherwise from any good bookshop or newsagent.

By Train: Irish Rail Logo Click here to go to homepage

Mohill is just off the Dublin to Sligo line.  The nearest station is Dromod (5miles/8km) away. Trains usually run 3 times a day.  Check www.irishrail.ie for updated information.  Coming from somewhere else in Ireland?  Well you have to route via Dublin if you want to stick to the train.  Try the bus instead. See the  map of the Irish Rail Network .  Buses do meet some of the trains, although calling a hackney from Mohill might be a better idea.

Note:  The timetable is subject to change - please check www.irishrail.ie for an up-to-date timetable.

(appeal: if anyone wants to send me the times/pickups of the private buses, I'm delighted to post them here)

At the time of writing, the Bus Éireann journey planner is work-in-progress (Aug 02) - however, the following link takes you to a list of all services serving Mohill: (departures) at http://194.106.151.88/bin/bhftafel.exe/es/57102/0:00 , (Arrivals) at  http://194.106.151.88/bin/bhftafel.exe/es/57102/12:15/an .  Do not depend on the figures below - note that times change post Agust 2002..

Note that the timetable below expires at the end of August 2002 (same timetable found in Feb 2003).  Note also that it is possible to get from places further afield such as Cork, Limerick, Belfast etc. Try the Bus Éireann journey planner.  I've found that it gets a bit confused when the destination is Mohill.  Try using Longford or Carrick-on-Shannon as a destination and it works fine!  It has a tendency to offer you overnight trips also - not recommended!

By Car:

Driving from Dublin Airport: Mohill is a 2 hours drive from Dublin Airport, approx 85miles/135km.  On a Friday afternoon, allow 3 hours due to Dublin traffic.  When you leave the airport,  take the motorway in the direction of Dublin City (M1).  Take the M50 heading west following the signs for N4 and Sligo - the N4 is the road to Leitrim.

You will come to a toll plaza - pay the toll (€1.80).  Immediately after the toll plaza, you will cross a bridge - take the next exit (left) keeping to the right hand side of the exit ramp..  At the top of the exit ramp, you will be at a large roundabout.  Follow the road around to the right to head for the N4 direction Sligo or Galway.

The first 50 miles or so is dual-carriageway or motorway - the toll for the motorway is €2.50.  An alternative route is to turn off the motorway before the toll-plaza at Kilcock go the old N4 route to Mullingar.

After passing Mullingar and Longford, you eventually come to Dromod village where you take a right hand turn for Mohill (direction Enniskillen/Ballinamore).  From there its just 5miles/8km to Mohill.

Driving from Dún Laoghaire: Mohill is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours drive from Dún Laoghaire.  Follow the signs for the N4 (Sligo).  This will take you to/through Blackrock, up Merrion Avenue and onto Fosters Avenue.  Continue to Dundrum.  Follow the sign for the M50.  This is the ring motorway around Dublin.  Take the N4 exit (direction Sligo).  Note that if you arrive at a toll plaza, you've gone too far!  Turn back and see the directions above from Dublin Airport.

After passing Mullingar and Longford, you eventually come to Dromod village where you take a right hand turn for Mohill (direction Enniskillen/Ballinamore).  From there its just 5miles/8km to Mohill.
