The Irish Government announced on
1 June 2001 that, following the winding-down of the UN's
peacekeeping role there after 23 years of Irish
involvement, 200 Irish troops will pull out of The
Lebanon and take up duty in Ethiopia and Eritrea towards
the end of the year. They will join a total force of
4,300 from 40 countries which will attempt to stablise
the situation in this war-torn region of North-East
Africa. Their main bases will be in the countries'
capitals Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and Asmara (Eritrea).
Their main task will be to monitor a cease-fire between
the two warring factions. The troops functions will
include the provision of protection for key personnel,
signalling and transport, plus perimeter and internal
security. |
