Town Twinning History |

In 1991 a delegation from Glenamaddy, Co.Galway visit Brittany with a view to seeking out a town which would be a suitable twin for Glenamaddy. Members of this delegation are Sean Garvey, Danny & Bernie Kirrane, Mae Murray and Anne Mooney. None of the towns visited are deemed to be suitable. Later that year some people from Dunmore which is twinned with Querrien let us know about Guiscriff seeking a twin town. Glenamaddy would meet a delegation and of course as they say the rest is history........... | |||||||||

A delegation from Guiscriff visited Glenamaddy in 1992 to meet the people and see the town. They were delighted with the visit and started to initiate a reciprocal visit to Guiscriff. Members of this delegation were Huguette Cadic, Claudine Le Scouarnec, Joel Le Pichom and Didier Bourvic. | ||||||||
Later in 1992 Glenamaddy send a delegation to Guiscriff. Members of the now formed Town Twinning Committee who visit there in September are Sean Garvey, Sean Jennings, Danny Kirrane, Noel Shaughnessy and Margaret Shaughnessy. They receive a hearty welcome and are very impressed with the hospitality which is shown to them. A decision to go ahead with the twinning is made after they return. | |||||||||
In 1993 Glenamaddy invite people from Guiscriff to witness the signing of the 1st part of the Twinning Agreement. Eighteen people travel the long journey including the Mayor - Andre Lemande and his wife Pierrette. The President of Guiscriff Marcel Faure makes what will be a lasting friendship with Glenamaddy's President Sean Garvey. Other friendships are pledged also. There are great celebrations in the town for the whole week. | |||||||||
In 1994 Guiscriff play host to Glenamaddy for the signing of the Charter. This time forty people travel. The hospitality extended to the group was exceptional. Many more friends are made and the group reluctantly leave full in the hope for a great future of sharing between the towns. | |||||||||
In 1995 the Glenamaddy Youth Club visit Guiscriff and Mae Murray and Margaret Shaughnessy also pay a private trip. Meanwhile Glenamaddy hosts a group of adults as in addition Karine Cadic comes to Glenamaddy to work while learning English. She is employed at the Oakland Hotel. |

In 1996 there is a private visit by Roger, Jeannine and Louis Allano. They enjoy touring Connemara and love Glenamaddy's turlough and Lough Lurgeen. This is followed in 1997 with Noel & Margaret Shaughnessy, Sean Jennings and Mae Murray when they visit their friends in Guiscriff. | |||||||||
In 1998 another official exchange takes place with a total of fourteen people from Glenamaddy visiting Guiscriff. In 1999 Noel & Margaret Shaughnessy again make the trip to Guiscriff. They meet Frederic Evennou who will come to Glenamaddy to spend his summer learning English whilst working at Rom Plastics. Later this year Glenamaddy will host a group of twenty five. At the end of a hectic week's programme they all celebrate the Mock Wedding of Christine Culoto to Martin Gilligan. Time will tell if it lasts. | |||||||||
Again in 2000 Margaret and Noel make the trip to Guiscriff where they will meet Serge Cotton who will come to Glenamaddy to spend a working holiday brushing up his English. He is employed at Brogans Bakery for the summer. At Easter there is a special event when Bernard Mahe marries local girl Carmel Kilmartin. In 2001 again Margaret and Noel spend Easter in Guiscriff. This is followed later in the year with a group of sixteen people from Glenamaddy making the visit. Finally in 2002 Sean and Bridie Jennings and Mae Murray accompany Noel and Margaret to Guiscriff for Easter. | |||||||||
Now as 2003 is with us we look forward to the visit of our good friends from Guiscriff and wait in anticipation to see how the loving couple are enjoying married life ????????????? |
