BRASS MONKEYS

IF YOU THINK ITS COLD HERE…

TRY A YEAR IN THE ARCTIC. Mark Evans an English scientist is leading a year long expedition to the Arctic, to Svalbard to be precise. The 2001-2002 trip is part of the U.K Schools Exploring Society programme.

Previous expeditions led by Mark have had a strong core group of young Scouts, all of whom he has said have been a credit to their associations and an asset on the expedition. He is now looking for candidates with a scouting background for his year in the arctic. So if you will be between 16 and 20 from 2001 to 2002 and think you are up for a challenge and have what it takes to get involved in the Arctic Year Project then contact Mark Evans through www.arcticyear.org

ROCKY HORROR

PICTURE SHOW

This superfantastic movie that spawned the time-warp is still playing in the Classic Cinema In Harolds Cross in D6 every Friday 11.30-1.30. The cinema itself is a far cry for your all mod cons multiplex, but then again it's just as well considering that the "actors", sprinkled among the punters, throw rice, toast, streamers and water at the unsuspecting £3.50 paying audience. These "actors" roar "one-liners" at the screen and act out the scenes at the front of the stage, encouraging you to join in the madness and even get up and  "… do the time-warp again…"

If you are going and intend getting into the spirit, you will need: a water pistol, some toast, a bag of rice, a newspaper and some streamers or a party blower. A few Venturer Groups on a recent Sleibhte are planning to go in May, possibly around a stayover somewhere local. If you are interested contact darraghobriain@ntdi.ie or c/o H.Q on Wed. Eves.

IN THE EVENINGS

W

ith summer just around the corner, better weather and longer evenings you and your Group should be planning to move your activities up a gear. There is a stack of events on the national calendar so if  Peak 2000 (2001 surely?) Cairde, Sleibhte West, Ben Nevis or the Coast to Coast Cycle don’t tickle your fancy then maybe you should sit down and plan a Summer season programme.

M

ost Groups seem to plan on a monthly basis at some form of formal or organised gathering. But with so much going on planning such a short period in advance is almost not worth it. So why not set yourselves some goals to achieve between now and Ventact in September and make the Summer the vibe it should be.

R

ogha, the Venturer award scheme is as good a place as any to start generating ideas and if you don’t have it maybe try some of these: A midnight or all night hike or swim, link up with another group, horse riding, pitch & putt or the driving range, rafting, make a video, a bivvying trip, murals, a bar- b-q the list is endless so get planning.

Without a doubt the highlight of any year is a Summer Expedition and a good Easter Camp runs in a close second. Easter will soon be upon us but even at this late stage you could still throw together a decent camp or at least some form of overnight activity. A SummerEx is also easy to put together and it gives a Group a great focus to be aiming at a particular mega trip. Start planning it now whether it be at home or abroad and it will come together a lot easier than you think. A novel approach to planning a SummerEx abroad is simply to see what Countries Ryanair is flying to on the cheap and then look up Where To Stay in Europe and see if there is a Scout Campsite within a cheap and convenient bus / train journey away. Get the finger out now and don’t forget to send InVent a report and some snaps.
