Galilee Programme

Are you at a cross-roads in your life; coming towards the end of school, finishing third level studies, or perhaps just becoming aware that God is calling you to do something more with your life? The Galilee programme is for you.

You are invited to set aside five afternoons, and one weekend, between September 2000 and May 2001, to take part in a process of discernment. Galilee is not a recruitment programme in the narrow sense of the term. It is designed to provide a service to any young person (18-35) who wants to live the Gospel more fully, and who wants to discover the call of God in his or her life.

Each of the afternoons will include:

  • some time of quiet prayer using the Scriptures,
  • a presentation on the day’s theme, followed by discussion,
  • vigil mass (the mass of Sunday),
  • a light meal.

Below is an outline of how the Galilee Programme was arranged for the current year 1990/2000. Participants have numbered between ten and twelve, (and some turned out to be very good cooks). The Programme will begin again in September 2000, and take much the same form, apart from some minor modifications, to take account of what we learnt in this first year of the project.

    Galilee Programme 1999-2000

Sat. 25th. September: The Word that Gives Life

Lectio Divina is an approach to prayer, using the Scriptures, which goes back to the earliest centuries of the Church. The emphasis is on listening to the Word of God, as it speaks to the circumstances of your own life. Try it for yourself.
    (Scripture: Luke 10: 29-37; Luke 18:35-43)

Sat. 30th. October: Vocation: A Relationship that Grows

How does God relate to me? How does he draw me to himself? How do I discover, in this relationship, who he wants me to be, and what he wants me to do? Where does the Church fit into this? Panel of Guests.
    (Scripture: 1 Sam. 3: 1-9; Mt. 19:16-22)

Sat. 27th. November: Priesthood in a Time of Change

What happened after the Twelve Apostles? How did the Church grow to be like it is today? Is this what Jesus intended? Why are there priests? What is the life of a priest like? What do priests do between one Sunday and the next? What do people expect from their priests. In what way are things changing? Diocesan priests and missionary priests? Panel of Priests.
    (Scripture: Lk. 4:16-21; Lk. 5:17-26; Jn. 13:1-16; Phil. 1:3-11)

Sat. 29th. January: Religious Orders and Lay Commitment

What is a religious order, and why are there so many of them? Why do members of religious orders make vows, and what are they. What shape does religious life take these days, and how is it likely to develop in the future? New forms of commitment; movements and lay associations. Living Gospel values as a lay-person; community, service. Guest panel.
    (Scripture: Mt. 18:18-23; Acts 2 :42-47)

Sat. 26th. February: Marriage, Sexuality, and Creative Celibacy

Is it realistic to talk about Marriage as a vocation? Is the Church too pre-occupied with sexuality? If sexuality is a gift, why does the Church place such a high value on Celibacy? What about loneliness? Is it possible to live celibacy constructively and creatively? Guest Speakers; Panel.
    (Scripture: Gen: 2:18-24; Mt. 19:1-12; Jn. :1-12)

Fri. 24th - Sun. 26th. March: Air and Prayer Weekend

This weekend, at the CYC house (Teach Lorcain, Glendalough) will provide the opportunity to pray, using the Scriptures, around some of the themes we have explored during the year. There will also be time to relax, to walk, and to enjoy created nature at its best.

Sat. 27th. May: A Future Full of Hope

What are the Challenges for the Church in the modern world? What are the signs of hope for the future? There is a place for me in the picture. What is it? What has come out of this year for me? Just ourselves.
    (Scripture: Jer: 29:11-14; Jn. 17:24-26, Acts 1:6-11).
