The Slieve Margy Development Group is one of seven area development groups established in Co. Laois under the E.U. LEADER II Programme. The Group first met in August 1997 to draft an area development plan for their region. This Area Development Plan was launched in September 1998. The Slieve Margy Area encompasses the following areas of south eastern Co. Laois: Arles, Ballickmoyler, Ballylynan, Barrowhouse, Crettyard, Graigue Rural, Killabben, Killeen, Maganey, Mayo/ Doonane, Newtown, Rossmore/ Killeshin, The Rushes, The Swan & Wolfhill,
The Group still meet on a regular basis to discuss various developmental issues for their area. They are always interested in hearing people's views on their area and they look forward to more people from the Slieve Margy area participating at their meetings. Details of the meeting are available from the addresses above.

In November 1999 with Grant Aid from Laois LEADER Rural Development Company Limited the Group began the development work on the Slieve Margy Way, a long distance walking route through their area. As a result of this work the Group have a total of 71km way marked ways, the Slieve Margy Way 47km, The Swan Loop 17km and the link between both 7km.

To complete this remarkable project the Slieve Margy Development Group are extremely gratefully to all the generous sponsors, FAS Community Employment schemes, volunteers, local Publicians for the use of their premises, prize sponsors and to all those who attended the functions, meetings & fundraisers.
