Sinn Féin Launch Anti-Incineration Petition in South East

Sinn Féin activists across the South East region, as part of their campaign against incineration, have combined to launch a Petition opposing incineration as a waste management option.

Speaking at the launch of the Petition, Wexford Sinn Féin Anti-Incineration spokesperson, Gerard Barron said: "This petition is supported by all of the major environmental groups in the country. We are asking people to lend their support to oppose this short-sighted and dangerous, move by the government that is clearly against the wishes of the people, due to their very serious health concerns.

"Wexford, Waterford, Carlow, Kilkenny and South Tipperary Sinn Féin have held meetings to discuss a combined campaign to oppose incineration being forced upon the people. This petition is the first part of this concerted campaign. Public meetings to highlight the dangers of Incineration are planned, as well as demonstrations across the region, in the coming weeks."

Our position is quite clear. Why incineration? Why not promote re-cycling and re-using as a preferred waste management program?

There is no demand from the people of the South East for incineration. Twice Wexford county council have voted against having incineration included in the waste management plan, only to be over-ruled by the county manager. We are told by the government that there are no plans to build an incinerator in Wexford, so why make provision for one?

We have previously taken to the streets demanding a Radiotherapy Unit and proper Cancer treatment facilities for the SE region. Fianna Fáil promised us Radiotherapy, they are giving us Incineration. Which is more important?
