Newly elected Sinn Fein councillor, Jimmy Fleming got off to a flying start on Tuesday night (Sept 10) putting two motions before the Town Council.
The first one dealt with the recent controversial over-ruling of the county council by the County Manager on the issue of waste management. The young councillor has slammed the ruling which he says is "dictatorial and makes a joke of the idea of local democracy." He added, "I want this body and every other local council to show the County Manager and the government how angry they are to see locally elected councillors not only stripped of what few minor powers they have but to be overruled when the vote doesn't suit the Establishment.
Councillors from all parties have said that they're opposed to the ruling so what are they going to do about it now? Are they going to lie down and be walked on? I want unanimous backing for this motion. Party politics shouldn't come into it. For a councillors to do otherwise and vote in favour of being overruled or having their powers taken away would be like turkeys voting for Christmas."
Another motion deals with traffic calming in the town with Fleming citing two junctions as particular "danger spots" which he believes would be made "much safer if simple painted roundabouts were put in place.
"I have no doubt that these would also improve traffic flow and help alleviate gridlock in the town. Numerous motorists have complained about these dangerzones, in particular the increasingly large number of commuters to Dublin, coming from the direction of the Ashdown Park Hotel, who are taking their lives in their hands by trying to get on to the busy Arklow Road. Perhaps some people might be put off when they hear talk of more roundabouts. However the type I'm referring to is cheap and simple to put in place, yet very efficient. I've seen them working very well in towns such as Tullow and other places."
Motion 1 reads:
“That this council notes that the elected members of Wexford County Council have on two occasions voted to reject the South East Regions Waste Management Plan due to its concerns over the option of incineration.
That this council further supports the view that the decision of these democratically elected members should be respected and wishes to register an objection to the overruling of local democracy by the office of the County Manager. (Due to undemocratic powers given under the Local Government Act)”
motion 2 reads:
"That this council notes the danger posed by traffic trying to negotiate the junctions at both the Coach House and also at the intersection of the N11 and the road coming from the Ashdown Park Hotel
That this council will seek to have simple painted roundabouts put in place at both intersections which will make both junctions safer and also improve traffic flow in the town"
