Cuts will make National Spatial Strategy meaningless for Wexford - Dwyer

Commenting on the announcement that Wexford is to be a Hub town in the National Spatial Strategy, Sinn Féin Councillor John Dwyer has described this new scheme as potentially meaningless in the light of government cutbacks and of the lack of capital investment in Wexford during the Celtic Tiger era.

"While we would welcome and support an emphasis on balanced regional development we must wonder if the government merely continues to invent a new language, instead of actually producing something real and positive for Wexford" said Cllr Dwyer.

"5 Gateways and 17 Hubs have been announced. Waterford have achieved Gateway status. Once again Wexford seems to be regarded as the poor relation?

"For all its positive aspects, this Strategy will be unworkable if the Government proceeds with the policies signalled in the Book of Estimates. Cuts in spending on roads, public transport, housing and job creation are rendering the National Development Plan null and void. And without the National Development Plan the National Spatial Strategy is meaningless.

"This government could not invest in Capital investment projects in Wexford during the Celtic Tiger era. Instead they presided over major job losses in the county.

"Do they really now expect us to be excited by the razzmatazz of this latest so called initiative?"
