Sinn Féin Cllr John Dwyer has welcomed the decision of An Bord Pleanála to refuse planning permission for a proposed €40m waste incinerator plant near Balbriggan in North County Dublin.
The appeal to An Bord Pleanála had been taken by Herhof Environmental Limited and Zero Waste Ltd against a decision made by Fingal County Council on 10 June 2002, refusing planning permission for the plant.
Herhof had hoped to construct it at Courtlough, Balbriggan. However the appeal was turned down by An Bord Pleanála on four seperate grounds.
Speaking on Wednesday Cllr Dwyer said:
"This news provides great encouragement to all of those in Wexford who are opposed to the plans of this same company to site an incinerator in the South East region.
"This decision comes hot on the heels of the withdrawal of a planning application by Ronan Industries for a meat and bonemeal incinerator in South Tipperary, following strong local opposition.
"It is evidence that local communities can mobilise to make a difference. The undemocratic decision of the County Manager to overturn Wexford County Councils rejection of incineration as a waste management option was never going to be the last word in all of this.
"Our campaign to keep incineration out of Wexford is certainly strengthened by these recent decisions."
