'Selfish Free Statism' slammed at Republican commemoration

In the largest turnout in recent years for the annual Liam Mellows commemoration, marchers lead by a piper, Republican colour parties and a fife and drum band, paraded from Gorey's '98 Monument through the town to St. Michael's Cemetery where a wreath was lain on the grave of Volunteer Ed O' Brien.

Re-assembling in Castletown, the numbers swelled and proceedings at Mellows graveside were chaired, as Gaeilge, by local man Leo Kenny. The large attendance included Wexford's four councillors, John Dwyer, Anthony Kelly, Nóirín Sheridan and Jimmy Fleming.

Prior to the main oration, Cllr. John Dwyer in a glowing tribute to Mellows, said that when he was "murdered by Irish conservative forces, the working class were deprived of a leader by those who wished to hijack the revolution and prevent genuine change. These same forces are with us today", he added.

In a reference to a much smaller commemoration held earlier he said that it was "laughable for any government spokesperson who justified the recent savage cuts to stand at the grave of Mellows and preach about "sharing the wealth". He also called for "Dublin to fully honour the terms of the Good Friday Agreement and release the remaining political prisoners in the state."

The main oration was given by Tyrone Assembly member, Francie Molloy, who in a very passionate speech continued the theme, slamming the "Dublin government" for "still standing idly by while small nationalist communities are being ethnically cleansed.

When Dublin signed the Good Friday Agreement they promised to protect the rights of Northern Nationalists. However, once again we see them standing idly by while members of my community are being bombed out of their homes on an almost daily basis.

During the past two years there have been over 600 gun and pipe-bomb attacks on Catholic homes by Unionist paramilitaries. Yet unbelievably and shamefully, this is being ignored by the Dublin government with the focus instead on the IRA who pose no threat to the peace."

A ballad session with local group the Celtic Paddies was later held in The Golden Anchor pub and a special local commemorative calendar was launched. It can be bought from the local Sinn Fein cumann.
