Eton & Corpus Christi College, Cambridge: 1939-45 War as Major KRRC (despatches): entered Foreign Service (now Diplomatic Service) 1946: Counsellor Tokyo 1961-63, Washington 1963-67 and Cabinet Office 1967-69. Ambassador to Republic of Korea 1969-71 and to Portugal 1974-76. 

Married 1st, 1939, Marcelle Catherine, who died 1994, youngest daughter of Johan Jacob Clotterbooke Patijn van Kloetinge, of Zeist, The Netherlands: 2ndly, 1997. (Dorothea) Mary Elizabeth, elder daughter of late Lt-Col. Richard Minchin, of Busherstown, Co. Tipperary, and has issue by 1st marriage:

Roderick Nigel Godolphin Trench, b 17 Nov 1944; ed Eton, and Stanford Univ, USA: m 1st 1967, Janet, who d 1971, da of Harold Hamilton-Faulkner, of Redwood City, Calif, USA; 2ndly, 1973, Susan Barbara, da of Lewis Frank Day, FRCS, DLO, of Cooden, Sussex. Has issue living (by 1st m): Timothy Roderick Hamilton, b 29 Feb 1968, ed Sherborne, and London Univ.  By 2nd m: Victoria Susan, b 1977.
