Easter 1998

Ummera Smoked Salmon is still Wild!

We have built our reputation on the excellent quality of our smoked salmon. This is primarily due to our persistence in using only the finest Wild Atlantic Salmon.

You will be aware that there has been a general decline in the numbers of Wild Salmon: in 1997, the Irish commercial catch was down by 25%; the reasons for this are probably many. The experts seem unable to agree on a specific reason. Doubtless, the over-enrichment of our rivers through pollution and agricultural run-off, excessive fishing, global warming, the resulting changes in weather patterns and ocean temperatures, increased predation by seals, sharks and cormorants, all play their part.

Last year, the Irish Government introduced new regulations which shortened the Salmon netting season by three months, and reduced the fishing days per week from five to four. These long overdue alterations have contributed to the reduced catch last year, but hopefully have allowed a larger number of salmon to reach their spawning beds. This is the first step to a managed renewable resource which has been seriously neglected over the years.

The result of these changes is a reduced number of salmon available to us. We would therefore urge you to let us know your requirements for Easter as soon as possible so that you will not be disappointed.
