What is a Technology Liaison Officer?
A Technology Liaison Officer (TLO) is a member of a
team around Ireland supporting, providing information and generally
helping disabled people who wish to use, are users or need to know
more about Assistive Technology.
The role of the Technology y Liaison Officer
is to help people with physical disabilities to access assistive
technology, information and services relating to assistive Technology.
Assistive Technology is any item, piece of
equipment or product system that is used to increase, maintain or
improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
(US. `Technology-Related Assistance of lndividuals
with Disabilities Act', 1988)
ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY CAN BE USED-
In the workplace, Leisure activities, Participating
in education, Using computers, In the home, Any daily living activity.
. . . . for example?
Environmental control - accessible remote
controls for turning on and off lights, opening doors,
or using the telephone, and other daily living activities, e.g.
switch or voice control of household devices.
Augmentative and alternative
communication - devices for people who are non-speaking or who have
communication difficulties.
mobility - alternative control of powered
wheelchairs, such as using a switch instead of a joystick to
operate the chair.
computer access - wrist rests - special
keyboards - adapted mouse switches - software - single switch
access - accessing Internet.
What kinds of support can I
expect from my Technology Liaison
Officer (TLO) ?
Services which your T.L.O. can provide include:
- helping you to work out your personal needs and
how A.T. could be of help
- giving you information on services which are available
- giving you information on technology which is available
- giving you information on possible funding
sources in your area
- supporting you in using your assistive technology
- providing or locating solutions to problems with
the technology
- providing or locating training in using the technology

The Technology Liaison Officer
service is being developed as part of the APHRODITE
project, an initiative of the
Client Technical Services Department of the CRC.
The aim of the project is to
improve Assistive Technology services, particularly at a local
level.
The Centers
for Independent Living and University College Dublin are partners in the
project, which is based on
similar models piloted in the United States.
The project is supported by the
Horizon strand of the EU Human Resources Initiative
EMPLOYMENT.
What is Client Technical Services?
Client Technical Services (CTS.)
consists of a team of Assistive Technology Advisors
who have backgrounds in
engineering, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and
technology. The team aims to employ a range of solutions to meet the
needs of Assistive Technology users around Ireland, providing
services such as:
