Reader Review
This book describes the muscles in the body wonderfully, July 29, 2000
I just recently graduated from the Swedish Institue of Massage Therapy In New York City. And in my third term one of the courses I took was Trigger Point Therapy. One of the assignment that my teacher gave us was, she gave each student three muscles each to do an oral report on. The rules, we could only use this book. Well, as I started to do my reports I found that This book was a surprising and wonderful reading tool. It was straight and too the point on each muscle, I was greatly impressed with this set of books, I would recommend reading/ or adding this book to any medical professionals library. This book is not just for The massage therapist. On a scale of one to ten I rate this book a ten .

Reader Review
The ultimate in drug-free pain relief!, January 24, 2001
Reviewer: from Norman, Oklahoma USA
As a Clinical Massage Therapist at a hospital, I use these books almost daily. In fact, I just ordered my second set. . . The first is so threadbare it's barely usable. ANYTIME I have a patient with a pain that I can't immediately identify I grab my Travell's. This set is an absolute BIBLE for anyone in the health care industry. Travell and Simons have esentially written "The Instruction Manual" for elliminating myofascial pain by going to it's source!

Janet Travell, MD and David Simons, MD were absolute pioneers when it came to myofascial pain and it's treatment. What makes these books even more amazing is that they were written a full quarter of a century before doctors even acknowledged that myofascial pain actually exsisted. . . What makes them interesting is that, in this, the most current edition, they have re-evaluated about 65% of the sites that before would only be considered for cortizone or saline injection and now recommend these areas be attended to by a Massage Therapist. They even go into strong detail as to stroke, direction and stretching. There are still plenty of sites that they recommend for injection, but only in a last resort situation.

The chapters are laid out in an incredibly easy to understand manner, though that's not even the beauty of the book's design. If you know the name of the muscle in question, you simply look inside the front cover; the muscle are all listed with their coresponding page numbers next to them. Don't know the name or not sure which muscle it is in the group? No problem. You again open the front cover and there, in 5th grade simplicity, are charts for all the areas covered in the book. Flip to the area in question and look through the diagrams. When you find (in the super well drawn diagrams) the pain you are trying to treat, you are given, not only several treatment plans, but etiology and most likely direct verve aggravation associated with the pain.

My only problem with the set is that the book are not as well bound as maybe they could be for the price. You'll notice, however, that it didn't have enough of an impact on me to give it any less that a perfect score.

I STRONGLY recommend this book for ANY health care practitioner that deals with pain control and alleviation.

Reader Review
Good reference for massage students, April 17, 2004
A reader from Los Angeles, CA
I used these charts as a good reference for some preparation for the National Certification exam for Massage and Bodywork. I also used Tortora's Principles of Anatomy and Physiology, and Leonardi's Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Vol 1, isbn: 0971999643
Vol 2 isbn: 0971999651
Vol 3 isbn: 097199966x
The trigger point charts are needed because they do ask questions on this. Tortora's book is needed because it gives you the complete knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Leonardi's study guides are needed because they show the type of questions to get ready for on the test. I'm glad I bought these five books.

Book Description
A clinical reference manual for the evaluation and treatment of muscle pain.

Detailed color illustrations of pain patterns and trigger-point locations.

First accessible reference manual for acupuncturists, chiropractors, osteopaths, and physical, occupational, and massage therapists.

In this easy-to-use guide to the treatment of muscle pain, medical educators Steven and Donna Finando present evaluation and palpation techniques for reducing trigger points--and thereby alleviating pain--in the most clinically significant musculature of the body. A "user's manual" for health care practitioners, Informed Touch examines a wide range of pain patterns and their treatment. Introductory chapters include discussion of the oriental medicine concept of Qi and its relationship to myology, information on trigger point location and activation, and palpatory skill-building techniques. Detailed information on each muscle, including pain-pattern and trigger-point illustrations and specific palpation instructions, allows clinicians to locate specific areas quickly and accurately. A visual index, showing reduced versions of the pain-pattern illustrations, makes it easy for clinicians to identify the muscles that may be involved in a patient's complaint. Informed Touch answers the reference needs of the growing community of physical and occupational therapists, acupuncturists, chiropractors, osteopaths, and massage therapists.

I find this book to be a great guide, October 5, 2001
Reviewer: kimberlilmt from United States
I am a massage therapist, who does deep tissue, sports and medical massage. I find this book to be a great guide. It is not as complete as the Janet Travell manuals, but it covers the main points of pain.

two thumbs up, June 26, 2000
Reviewer: Howard Moffet from San Francisco
This is an excellent book for integrating an understanding of the myofascial body: pain syndromes, stretches to release, exercises to strengthen, with acupuncture points and meridians and trigger points. The authors help bridge the two aspects of touch: evaluation/assessment and therapeutic. I have found it to be immediately useful and have recommended it to others.

Mark D. Seem, Ph.D., L.Ac., President, Tri-State College of Acupuncture author of Bodymind Energetics, A New American Acupuncture, and Acupuncture Physical Medicine

Knowing how to touch the human body when it is in distress is the skill that links bodyworkers with physical- and oriental-medicine practitioners. Nowhere is this knowledge more developed than in the seminal work on trigger-point release of Drs. Janet Travell and David Simons. Their magnum opus now becomes eminently accessible in this clinically pragmatic manual. Informed Touch belongs in the office of every professional practicing a physical medicine of any kind.

Steven L. Rosenblatt, M.D., Ph.D., L.Ac., Founder and past president, California Acupuncture College
This insightful book points out a new direction in medical therapeutics. It clearly delineates where the energetic field of the body intersects and animates the physical structure. By acting at this intersection, true healing can take place.

Roberta F. Shapiro, D.O., Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Informed Touch represents a gallant and courageous adventure into the true realm of complementary medicine. Never before have the disciplines of myofascial pain release and meridian therapy been so beautifully and practically connected. Simply put, this book is a must for all practitioners of hands-on medicine.

Marilyn Freedman, P.T., certified childbirth educator
Donna and Steven Finando have married some of the finest techniques that eastern and western physical medicine have to offer. Incredibly, they have done this in a single text, with excellent graphics, charts, and guidelines to specific soft-tissue work. This essential guide takes the place of many large volumes, especially when information is needed immediately. I highly recommend Informed Touch for not only the experienced practitioner, but for students as well.

Spectrum, January/February 2000
Informed Touch should be of interest and value to anyone involved in pain management.

Massage Therapy Journal, Summer 2000
Informed Touch is a well-written and concise text on myofascial pain.

A Must Buy Book For Anyone With Fibromyalgia !
Reviewer: A reader from England - 9 July, 2001
The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook is an easy to read, informative book that will help you to locate your trigger points (painful tender areas which refer pain to other parts of your body) and show you how to ease them using massage. Several massage tools are discussed but it also shows you how results are just as easily achieved using your hands or a tennis ball. As someone who has both Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain Syndrome, I wouldn't be without this book. It has taught me how to quickly and easily locate and massage my trigger points and has allowed me to finally gain some relief from my chronic pain. You owe it to yourself - and your body - to buy this book!

All Massage Therapists Should Own and Use This Book, May 1, 2001
Reviewer: Janet Ollman, L.M.T. from Orion, IL United States
Clair Davies is really on to something here. I deal with chronic pain in my massage therapy practice daily. I've been able to help my clients, using Clair's methods, to rid themselves of pain they've dealt with for years. Clair presents his material in an easy to read, practical format--and the pictures are excellent. Anyone--professional and lay person alike--can benefit from this book. In fact, I recommend this book to my clients. I'm always encouraging them to try to help themselves during the time between our sessions. If you've got pain or help others deal with their pain, get this book. You won't be sorry.

This book is a MUST for the professional soft tissue worker, October 11, 2000
Reviewer: A reader from Birmingham, AL USA
As the office manager for a chiropractic clinic, I know how often the Doc references this book to demonstrate trigger points to patients. It has also proven to be an invaluable resource in court, as Doc is often called for expert medical testimony. This book is very clear and easy for the layperson to understand. I highly recommend!
