Book Description
The author presents the principles of Zero Balancing in everyday terms, explaining how the practitioner finds areas in the body with energy blockages, then brings the body back into balance - "back to zero" - by clearing these blocks. Uniquely, this therapy touches simultaneously the bones and joints of the body and the flow of energy through them. Areas of the body where there is a loss of function or potential, through stress, accident or habit, may be restored to full vitality.

More generally, this is a book about the anatomy and physiology of energy: where it flows, how it behaves and its relationship to the structure of the body. Whether you are a health-care practitioner or a client of one of the many complementary therapies, this book will illuminate the very foundations of the use of energy in healing and show how to enhance the effects of any therapy which involves touch.

The book is written clearly, simply and eloquently, and is full of vivid examples of particular clients, their problems, their sessions and their experiences. Their stories bring Zero Balancing to life.

From the Author
This is the first book about Zero Balancing - a form of bodywork which combines knowledge of anatomy from the west with knowledge of energy from the east. It gives a lively account of this form of therapy and how it works, illustrated by a host of examples and stories from clinical practice; but it also does much more than that...

First, the principles and concepts of Zero Balancing embody real wisdom about how to work safely and effectively with another human being, and will be of real interest to anyone who is involved in health care. They will strike an immediate chord with practitioners such as doctors, osteopaths, chiropractors, physiotherapists, acupuncturists, reflexologists, masseurs, nurses and so on; but psychotherapists and social workers have found it helpful to apply them to their work as well. Regardless of whether or not the reader ever chooses to become a practitioner of Zero Balancing, its basic ideas are of immense importance to the whole business of serving those who come to him or her for help.

Second, the book also explains simply and clearly the whole business of energy in the human body, suggesting that there is a great deal of unnecessary suspicion, confusion, and mystification about it. To demonstrate this, the book explains how anyone can learn to recognise it and touch it. This, it transpires, is not some esoteric skill demanding psychic ability; it simply requires focused attention on what is routinely noticed.

Reader Review
An inspiring book on a unique healing modality, August 9, 2000
Reviewer: Catherine McLean from Jamaica, West Indies
This is an excellent book, particularly after you have taken the Zero Balancing Core I workshop. It really should be required reading. I found the writing to be clear, complete and perfectly in line with the information received in the workshop. I've been a practicing massage therapist since 1982 and a massage teacher since 1991. I took my first Zero Balancing workshop in November, 1999 and thoroughly enjoyed it. There was a tremendous amount of information to grasp from a different perspective, and as with any new technique, I felt pretty lost and overwhelmed when the group split up and we were on our own. Luckily, an associate of mine had purchased the book from the instructor and several months later she insisted that I read it. I am so grateful. I have to admit, I wasn't practicing the technique with any regularity and the reasons I took the workshop in the first place were fading. Well, this book has completely revalidated my understanding of this powerful work and I have just ordered my own copy! The information is totally inspiring, mind opening, and reinforcing for anyone serious about perfecting the art of Zero Balancing ... I recommend it highly.

Book Description
An essential guide for anyone with an interest in body therapy, this book contains an exploration of the connections between Eastern and Western beliefs about health and the human body, based on the concept of energy as a fundamental force in nature. This hidden energy theory incorporates facets of Chinese acupuncture and Hindu yoga, while establishing that Western medical knowledge actually validates these ancient Eastern insights. Dr. Smith explains how health care practitioners can access this energy through their hands, feel its existence, and see a person's response to the movements.

Reader Reviews
great book, January 16, 2003
A reader from Ann Arbor, MI USA
An excellent book. The author, a D.O. and M.D., became interested in Eastern approaches to healing when he witnessed an acupuncture session. Smith gives great explanations relating the flow of energy to body structure. I was particularly impressed by his account of how the energy of each chakra relates to the skeletal structure. The information in the book is densely packed, and -- at least in my own readings -- is best absorbed in small doses. A caveat: I don't have firsthand experience with the author's particular system, Zero Balancing. In any case, I believe the book contains valuable information for people who already have experience in some mode of energy healing.

Inner Bridges changed my life, December 14, 2000
A reader from Capitola, CA United States
My professional health care practice was dramatically changed after having read Inner Bridges. Doors opened to my understanding of energy and how it relates to body structure, including the bones and joints of the body. I am very grateful for the insights given by Dr. Fritz Smith in this book.

Amazon.com Review
Whatever your goal for going to a spa or retreat (stress relief, meditation, thinner thighs), or your budget (from extravagant to Spartan), you'll find Healing Centers & Retreats full of ideas about and insight into destinations across the U.S. and Canada. Author Jenifer Miller's comprehensive collection runs the spectrum from the gestalt focus of the celebrity-studded Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, to the hatha yoga and massage offered at the rustic Trillium Retreat Center on Vashon Island, Washington, to the plush Aveda Spa Retreat in Osceola, Wisconsin. Miller's visited all these centers (lucky duck!), so you can fully trust her evaluations. She describes each site by atmosphere, accommodations, rates, services, staff, and nearby attractions. Toll-free numbers and Web-site and e-mail addresses are also included when applicable. If you've always wished for such a getaway, this book will inspire you to make plans--or nothing will.

Miller also lists thorough descriptions of centers aimed at treating chronic ailments and disease (such as migraines or heart disease) through the use of biofeedback, Ayurvedic medicine, craniosacral therapy, nutritional treatments, Chinese medicine, or a customized combination thereof. And if you have never heard of craniosacral therapy, marma-point therapy, or holoenergetics, don't fret. Miller explains all in the fantastic glossary. There's also a thorough index with listings by healing center name, therapy used, and location.

Synopsis
"Energy Medicine" is a way of viewing the body, combining Eastern thought with Western physiological science. It has its own diagnoses, its own classifications and categorizations - its very own way of looking at a person and his or her illness. So, for example, there is not one energy treatment for asthma, rather one has to regard the body as a whole and determine the treatment according to the individual. The aim is always to promote health through balance and harmony, removing any negative energy blockers and disentangling our energy pathways. This practical introduction to an ancient form of medicine looks at energy, looks the human body and then reveals the relationship between the two. It is aimed at anyone who is interested in leading a happy and healthy life.
