Jason Maloney, Ardara, Pauric and Michael Breslin, Aighe, and John O'Donnell, Loughros Pt, are to be congratulated on their courage and initiative. Christopher Boyd, Loughros Pt, has also returned from his agricultural college placement on a farm on the Canterbury Plains of New Zealand. He found the scale of farming a little different - a farm with 12,000 ewes, 400 deer, and 250 cattle, not to mention 12 dogs, and a few horses to go where a quad wouldn't! The experience gained is bound to be of value. Welcome home to all four of these long-distance travellers.

Carol Service and Nativity Play
On Sunday the 15th, at 7 p.m., the combined Methodist and Church of Ireland congregations filled St Connall's Church, Ardara, for their annual Christmas Carol Service and a presentation by the pupils of the Wood School of their nativity play, entitled 'The Inn-Keepers Daughter'. The church was beautifully decorated for the occasion, and the carols were sung with gusto. However, it was the performance of the twenty Wood School pupils which was the most memorable part of the evening. They threw themselves into the three songs of their presentation with great enthusiasm. The songs had a very modern off-beat rhythm, reminiscent of the Carribean style, which made the lyrics swing along. The lyrics themselves were modern in tenor, as evidenced by the following lines : "Mary, Joseph, Tell me what you're gonna do, There is no way you'll be getting Bed and Breakfast for two." The congregation were delighted with the children's evident enjoyment and whole-hearted singing.Congratulations to the children and their two teachers Claudia McGinley and Marie-Therese Haughey (nee Gillespie). Marie Therese is teaching at the school whilst Lorraine Long is on maternity leave.

Parish Council
The treasurer reported a balance of 4594 euros at the Ardara Parish Council meeting of December the 9th. John McBrearty, joint-chairman of the Community Centre Committee, stated that the cause of a persistant leak in the roof of the centre had been found and repaired, and he hoped that the problem was now solved. The lighting in the centre had been reviewed. He thanked all those who had been involved in undertaking these necessary tasks. Donal Haughey, of the Walking Festival Committee, said that they were in the process of preparing their 2003 brochure. The Brennan brothers of irishadventure.com are presenting their tourist service at the annual national Holiday and Leisure Fair. It is hoped to have brochures advertising the Walking Festival and the Ardara 'Cup o' Tae' music festival on display at the Brennan's stall . The Tidy Towns committee have taken down and stored the hanging baskets which were such a feature in the village centre during the summer. They are getting their 2003 programme ready for a spring start!

Counciller Slowey congratulated Emily Whelan on obtaining a 1000 euro grant from Donegal Childcare for the purpose of funding a feasibility study into the establishment of a Community Play Group in its own quarters, on Herrons' field. A draft Foreshore Licence for the Ardara Sewage Scheme has been granted by the Department of the Marine, but has still to receive final approval. Documents from the Donegal County Council have been sent to the Department of the Environment with regard to six two-bedroom houses, thirteen two-bedroom units, and a single bedroom unit to be built on Molloys' field, below Ardconnell. Cller Slowey further reported that fifty applications for the repair of L.I.S. roads in the Ardara area had been received. Such roads, to qualify, had to serve two parcels of land, or provide access to a bog or seashore. The funding for the roads would become available during the 2002-2004 time space. Twelve Council lights had been approved in the area, and five more were sought. It was less expensive to provide lights where poles were already in existence, he said. Four lights could be provided for the same cost as one light and pole.Works on the N56 at Kilraine were being allowed to settle before the road would be re-surfaced in the New Year. Cller Slowey remarked on the new bus routes being offered in the Ardara region on Fridays. The service would be of particular use to pensioners, and he congratulated Tony Breslin and Mary Breslin, both of whom had worked with South West Donegal Community Partnership Ltd to get this scheme established. Gwen Breslin was recently elected to represent the Ardara Parish Council on the S.W.D.C.P.Ltd rural transport board.

Breda Boyle said how disappointing it was that despite numerous promises, the provision of good facilities for a Day Care Centre and a Health Care Centre in Ardara were being continually postponed. An additional room for chiropody was an urgent necessity. There were in the region of 600 pensioners in the Ardara area, and they deserved far better facilities than those they had at present. Cller Slowey explained that the County Council had decided to hire a company to make a complete flood survey of the Owentocker River before allowing any further development near the riverbank in Herrons field or in Molloys' field. Donal Haughey, the Parish Council chairman, said that of immediate importance is the leasing of an adequate number of rooms from Dr Sweeney, by the North Western Health Board, to serve as an interim Health Care Centre and Day Care Centre. A letter to this effect will be sent from the Parish Council to the N.W.H.B.

In answer to a question regarding S.I. houses, Cller Slowey said that S.I. stood for Specific Instance houses and that such houses were built on the applicant's own land. It was cheaper for the County Council to build such houses than to construct social housing on land they had had to purchase. However, to get approval and construction of an S.I. house took about five years.

Conal Shovlin reported on the situation as regards the proposed Dolmen Centre swimming pool. At present the Dolmen Centre committee are putting together a revised programme on a smaller scale, to submit in due course to Donegal County Council.

The chairman expressed the sympathy of the meeting to John Damien Gallagher, on the death of his father, John Francis Gallagher.

The next meeting will be on Monday, January the 13th at 9 p.m. in the Community Centre.

The Late John Francis Gallagher
The death occurred in Letterkenny Hospital on Tuesday the 3rd of December of John Francis Gallagher, aged eighty years. The funeral took place at the Church of the Holy Family, Ardara, on Thursday the 5th of December, Canon Austin Laverty officiating, assisted by Fr Hugh McGonagle, Sligo. John Francis was born and raised in Ballycashel, living all his life in the house built by his great grandfather. During his lifetime he had been very involved with community affairs, having been a member of the Show Committee, a long-serving member of the Parish Council, doing his part in political life, and having been a member of the L.B.F. for the duration of the years of World War 2. From that period, he was given the name of "Corporal John", and was known in the community under that title. He was a talented story-teller, and enjoyed collecting them, as did his late sister, Margaret Gallagher (known as Margaret Wee Joe), Glenties. He was always there for his neighbours. He was a lover of the Irish language, and a fluent speaker of it.

John Francis was pre-deceased by his sisters Margaret Wee Joe, Glenties, and Annie Murphy, New York, and his brother, Packie, Donegal town. He is survived by his wife, Mary Rose, and sons John Damian, Ballycashel, Hugh, Killysteeve, Phillip, Killybegs, Gerry, Bundoran, his daughters Patricia Nicholson, Narin, Mary Adams, Portglenone, Maireád Walsh, Ballintra, Kathleen Tolan, Carrigart, his sons- and daughters-in-law, his sisters, Agnes Gallagher, Tullyard Rd, Glenties, and Mary Cross, Tipperary, his sister-in-law Mary Gallagher, Donegal town, his brothers-in-law Patrick McNelis, Brackey, Michael Cross, Tipperary, and Declan Murphy, New York, and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The community extends their sympathy to the family in their loss.

The Late Winnie De Roeck (nee Molloy)
At the age of 72, the death occurred in a Chicago hospital, on December the 7th, of Winnie De Roeck (better known locally as Winnie Molloy, of Meenaneary). Winnie was born and raised in Meenaneary, and had two brothers and two sisters. At the age of 18 she left for the U.S., where her last employment was doing homecare for elderly people. She returned once for a holiday in 1982. Despite the distance, she kept up close links with her family in Ireland. She was a kind and tender-hearted person, with a strong religious faith.

Winnie was pre-deceased by her husband some years ago, and was also pre-deceased by her brothers, Pete, Chicago, Phelim, Kilcar, and her sister, Mary McGill, Carrick. She is survived by her four sons (U.S.), her two grandchildren, her three sisters, Bridget Maloney, Chicago, Sarah Gallagher and Catherine Cannon of Ardconnell, and many nieces and nephews both in Ireland and in the U.S. Winnie will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Senior Citizens
One hundred and four people sat down to dinner in the Nesbitt Arms Hotel on Wednesday the 11th of December for the annual Christmas Party of the Ardara Senior Citizens. Sixty of the guests were from Ardara, and the rest were their friends from the Glenties. A great afternoons entertainment and dancing followed the dinner. The most senior citizens present were Jane Maloney, Hillhead, and Barney McNelis, Drumaghey Park, formerly of Meena Valley. Peter Oliver, John Sweeney, Crumlin, Matt McNelis, Edergole, John Hegarty, Narin Rd, and Dympna Duff, Edergole, provided the music.

The Ardara party had been preceded by a party in the Bayview Hotel on the 6th of December, when the hosts had been the Killybegs Care of the Aged. This was also a very enjoyable occasion.

The Ardara Community Care Committee would like to thank all those who have contributed over the past year to making their programme so full of memorable events and pleasant times.

The Late Ellen (Nellie) Maxwell
The death occurred suddenly, at her home in Drimaha, on Monday the 2nd of December, of Ellen Maxwell, aged 83 years. Nellie, as she is better known, was born in Summy, Dawros Peninsula, and had two sisters and two brothers, all of whom attended school in Kilclooney. Nellie married Sonny Maxwell, and the couple lived and worked in England for twenty-four years before moving back to Ireland, living in Limerick for six years, and then for the past twelve years in Ardara. Nellie was an outgoing person, young at heart, enjoying fun and the company of others. She had, of late, particularly enjoyed her weekly visits to the Day Centre at Killybegs Community Hospital where she made many friends. Some of her neighbours, for whom Nellie kept open door, describe Nellie as having been "switched on". Her mind was alert and she bought a newspaper every day to keep up with what was going on in the world. She will be remembered by various people as a mother, a grandmother, a great grandmother, and as a good neighbour and friend. Nellie very much appreciated her neighbours, without whom she would not have maintained her independence for so long. The funeral took place at St Connall's Church, Ardara, on December the 4th, Rev Ken McLaughlin, Inver, officiating, in the absence of Rev Freeman. Family and friends travelled from Limerick, northern Ireland, and England to attend the funeral.

Ellen is survived by her daughters, Eleanor Street, Redhill, Surrey, Rebecca Max, Croyden, her sons, Bill Maxwell, Limerick, Tommy Maxwell, Croyden, her daughter-in-law, her son-in-law, her grand children and great grandchildren, her nieces and nephews. Nellie will be greatly missed by her family and a wide circle of friends.

Santa Comes to Town
Santa Claus was very happy during his visit to Ardara to see a big crowd of children and their parents having a lot of fun with the bouncy play equipment in the Community Centre last Sunday afternoon. He enjoyed spending time with each child who queued to speak with him, and they enjoyed being with him. Unfortunately stormy weather was raging at the time of the turning on of the Christmas lights in town, and Santa, being worried about making the long journey home in such rough conditions, turned the lights on without ceremony when the time came, and set out as soon as he could on the long road home.

Due to public appreciation of the decorations in the town in past years, this year the Town Traders have added some beautiful coloured illuminated decorations on the bridge and on the Diamond. It is a real treat to see them. It's hoped that many people will shop locally this year. Remember that the shopping spree finishes this Saturday. Many bargains are available.
