A Lost Vote ?
Jane Maloney, Hillhead, aged over 98 years, is rather
annoyed about not being able to get to the voting station
on election day. She said, "Nobody came near me on
the day of the election, and I have always voted. They
changed my name without asking me or my daughter and
registered me in Kilclooney. I only stay with my daughter
in Kilclooney at week-ends. I've lived here in Hillhead
very many years." Election Day transporters please
take note!
Ardara Women's Group
At their last meeting, Monday the 27th of May, the
Women's Group enjoyed a delightfully informal talk from
Breda Boyle. She spoke about her experiences and
impressions of her recent world cruise on board the
'Oriana' and showed her listeners photos, postcards, and
souvenirs purchased in different locations when the ship
was in port. Breda has a talent for spotting how humans
have learned to live with their environment, despite the
hardships of climate, the economy, and in some places,
years of war. If you see her wearing her coolie hat,
you'll know she obtained it in Singapore. A very
practical piece of headgear, even for Donegal, since it
protects from both sunshine and rain!

Marching Bands
Compete in Ardara
By
Susan Boyd
|
|
There was a wonderful spectacle
of Diamond on Sunday afternoon, the 19th of May, as the
Donegal Marching Bands' Association competed for the
honours of the day. The sun shone, in sympathy with the
colourful occasion, rendering ice-creams and liquid
refreshment a welcoming thought to the spectators. |
|
In the Novice section, Fanad Accordian Band took
first place, and only one point behind them in second
place was Banna Ceoil Óige Ghaoth Dobhair. The Community
Youth Band of Letterkenny took third place, having tied
with St Columba's Band, Manorcunningham, but because they
had gained one more point than St Columba's in the music
section, they were awarded third place. |

St Cronan's Band, Dungloe, were winners
in the Junior Section, where Buncrana Youth Accordian
Band took second place and third place was awarded to St
Joseph's Community Band, Killygordan.
The Senior section was hotly contested. Ramelton Town
Band and St Patrick's Band, Carnan, tied in first place
with an over-all 191 points. It was necessary for the
judges to use the allocation of music points to decide
the winning band. On this criterion, St Patrick's from
Carnan were declared to be the winners, Ramelton Town
Band was second, and St Mary's Band, Convoy, was third.
Crickamore Fife and Drum Band won the Flute Section, with
second place being awarded to the Maghery Fife and Drum
Band, who were only three points behind Crickamore. |

On behalf of the Ardara Town Traders,
Cller Terence Slowey thanked the Donegal Marching Bands'
Association and the competition judges. Ajudicators for
the day were Marie Clarke (music), and John Letters (march/drill).
Peter McGee, chairman of the Donegal Marching Bands'
Association, praised the Ardara Town Traders' efforts and
said that the local organising committee had done a great
job. He announced that the next competition day would be
on June the 2nd in Annagry, starting at 2 p.m.
A special trophy from the Ardara Town Traders'
Association was presented to Banna Ceoil Óige Ghaoth
Dobhair for their effort in participation.
All the bands are to be congratulated on their immaculate
uniforms and well-practised marching drills. Their music
was cheerful and spirited. Spectators were well rewarded
by the sight and sound of these bands stepping it out to
music traditional and modern. Their teachers and leaders
are doing fine work providing this cultural and enjoyable
recreation for the members of their bands.
Ardara St Mary's National School Band did not compete,
but proudly led the other bands into the town for the
competition. This band was only established in January of
this year and has musicians as young as four years of
age, but they have already taken part in their first St
Patrick's Day Parade. Their teachers, Colm Cannon and
Deirdre Mooney (nee Bonner), have put some effort into
training their bandmembers and in obtaining the necesary
accoutrements. Ardara townspeople were proud to hear
their own school band play the National Anthem at the
beginning of the competition.

Gildea is gone but not forgotten
By Daniel Browne
This election may see a return to what Fianna Fail would
like to consider "the norm" in Donegal South
West with the withdrawal of Thomas Gildea from public
life. But the soft spoken T. D. will leave behind him the
permanent doubt that given the right issue it could all
happen again!
Speaking at the count centre in Donegal Town on Saturday
the outgoing Deputy Gildea told the this newspaper he was
happy not to have his name on the ballot paper this time
around.
Deputy Gildea was acting as a tally man for his former
assistant Gwen Breslin who became a late entry in the
race to contest the seat her former employer won in 1997.
"I'm not under the same pressure now as if I had
been running myself", he said
No doubt though there are many who would say the former
Deputy may have been under extreme pressure if he had
decided to contest the election.
Mrs. Gwen Breslin, who ably managed Deputy Gildea's
office and learned the intricacies of public life and
people's concerns over the last five years, however only
polled 951 first preference votes and was the first out
of the race.
She told the "Democrat" she had canvassed the
constituency extensively and was hopeful of a better
performance. "Well, the people have decided and If
they return two Fianna Fail and one Fine Gael and Donegal
is neglected again they will get what they deserve",
she said.
For what It's worth while on the canvass with another
politician In Glenties before the election the "Democrat"
encountered two '97 Gildea voters who said they were not
happy with his performance and would not support him
again.
However the former Deputy has been adamant that it is
because of the true desire to spend time with his family
that he left to political scene. In the St. John Bosco
Centre on Saturday it was noted with some irony that this
departure came on the same day as that of his personal
nemesis, Deputy Nora Owen. "I have done my five
years I felt I gave it all my time for that period and I
decided way back over two years ago that I wouldn't be
running again. It's very time consuming, but I didn't
mind, I enjoyed the five years, but I wouldn't look
forward to another five", he said.
While Deputy Gildea started out the day hopeful for his
former assistant's chances his main hope was that at
least one independent would be returned in the election.
However when the final tally figures came In he had to
face the fact that it was unlikely to happen.
"An Independent seat would have been of great
benefit to the constituency because for far too long we
were taken for granted here in Donegal and that was to
the detriment of the entire county.
"The prospects for Donegal are not too good over the
next number of years because I would be almost 100%
certain that we will not get the same level of funding",
he said.

LATE PADDY HAUGHEY
The death took place in London on the 8th of April of
Paddy Haughey, Drimaha, aged 81 years. As a young man, he
fished on the trawlers in Killybegs and Dunmore East, but
his great love was fishing salmon in Loughros Mor estuary.
He was a very active member of the Ardara G.A.A. Club.
In 1949 Paddy went to England where he worked in a sugar
factory, but he returned home after a short period to
continue fishing and he became a fish buyer for local
companies. He returned to England in the '60's to work on
the railways before taking up employment with Murphy
Construction. He retired in the late '80's and then was
in failing health a number of years before his death.
Many people from the Ardara area remember Paddy with
affection because of his concern for any Irish young
person settling in England. He would help to find
accommodation and work for a young person from home, if
help was required. His funeral was attended by a large
number of people.
Paddy is survived by his sons Patrick and Connell Aiden,
his daughter, Patricia, his son-in-law, Adrian, his
daughter-in-law, Karen, his grandchildren, Richie, John,

DONEGAL MARCHING BANDS COMPETITION
This will be the second year that Ardara has hosted the
Donegal Marching Bands Association Competition. It is
hoped that a total of fifteen bands will attend in Ardara
next Sunday, May the 19th. Most importantly, people will
get the opportunity to hear the band of our local St
Mary's National School, under the supervision of their
teachers, Deirdre Mooney and Colm Cannon. This new band
will lead the parade from the Community Centre at 2 p.m.
sharp, to the Diamond, where our local band will perform
the National Anthem, after which the competition will
take place. It is hoped a large number of people will
come along to support this event, as was the case last
year, when everybody had an enjoyable afternoon.
There will be traffic diversions in operation for the
duration of the competition, which is expected to last up
to three and a half hours. McGeehans bus will be the only
vehicle allowed through the town.
MICHELLE PLAYS ANNIE
Great credit is due to young Michelle McHugh for her
outstanding performance in the musical show "Annie"
held in Donegal town recently. Though she was an orphan
in the play, in real life Michelle is the eldest daughter
of Pauline and Padraig McHugh, Portnoo Rd. Ardara, and
she is a pupil of Meentinadea National School. Well-done,
Michelle.

Carrying
the torch for an independent voice
By Gerard Cunningham
|
|
Gwen Breslin is tired yet full of energy. The
canvass is going well, much better than in 1997. The
entire constituency has been covered this time, unlike
then, and the response has been positive.
With less than a week to go, only the local area around
Ardara remains to be covered, then the final few days
will be spent double-checking preparations.
The mother of four has worked as constituency secretary
for Thomas Gildea for the last five years, and is now
hoping to hold on to the Independent seat in Donegal
South West. |
Gwen canvassing
Granny . . . Gwen Breslin on the canvassing
trail, calls in on her grandmother, Molly Gallagher,
looking for a No. 1 vote. Pictured front row are Molly
and Gwen. Back row: Gerard Cunningham, Eileen Keeney,
Nancy McCarthy, (Gwen's mother), Elish and Thomas Gildea.T.D.
|
|
On Saturday, the first stop is Granny
Molly. Molly Gallagher from the Wooden Bridge, or Molly
Tom as she is known locally, will be 96 this year. She Is
Gwen's granny, but no vote can be taken for granted. She
has voted in every election since 1927, and this week
will be no different. The conversation is as much about
football as It Is about the election, as people remember
Big Tom Gallagher's footballing exploits.
Michael McGeehan is working around the house in Edergole.
For him, as with many people, the state of the roads is a
major issue. "There isn't one good road going into
Ardara."
"Someone asked when I was on Highland what are you
going to do for Ardara," says Gwen. "Well roads
in and out of Ardara will have to be the first priority.
Then tourism, bringing tourism-related projects to the
area."
Michael also wants Gwen's opinion on who will be the next
Minister for Public Enterprise. "That is the one I'm
interested in, because that will determine our future.
We're doing a service from here to Dublin, and John
McGinley does one further up, and Bus Eireann does one
from Donegal and Letterkenny.
"These are supposed to be profit-making routes, but
CIE gets money to do them. The costs have rocketed, so I
think there's a fair play issue here. I have nothing
against CIE, they offer a very good service, but I just
want to be sure there's fair play."
John Molloy in Magumna is also taking advantage of the
good weather to get some work done when Gwen calls.
"I had some other representatives here. I said to
them, go back and tell them not to promise too much, not
to promise what you can't stand over.
"Sure what can they do anyway that you can't do
yourself? Still, it's nice to have them if you are stuck."
Follow on work
Mrs. Molloy hopes Gwen will follow on the work Thomas
Gildea has done for the area. The roads get a mention
again, and services for senior citizens. "Even
people to come round and talk to them, carers to look in
and check on them."
Thomas Gildea is canvassing for Gwen, and says the
canvass is completely different to his own campaign in
1997.
"If anything It's going better. The response is very
good. We've covered the whole constituency and I have to
say the response is way above anything I would have been
expected.
"People are concerned about the roads, and about
insurance. Car insurance, but also insurance costs In
general. Builders liability is coming up a lot as a
problem" he says.
"Generally, the roads are an Issue, and unemployment
especially with the closing down of so many jobs In
Gweedore."
"I find there's a lot of general dissatisfaction
with parties. I wouldn't like to be out canvassing for a
party, it would be very tough going." |
|
|
John Feeney feels there's a good chance of achieving
something with a local representative. "The young
vote is very important too. A lot of them won't vote too,
which is very sad, but if you can get them out it will
make a big difference, because they won't just follow the
parties."
In addition to the Issues mentioned on the doorsteps on
Saturday, Gwen has some others to pursue. |
|
Gwen says that the Issue of domestic
violence against women is a big issue for her as a woman.
"We are badly lacking In emergency housing in this
constituency, in the whole county. For whatever reason,
whether people are separated or If there are family
problems, if Its sexual abuse or domestic violence in the
home, there is no place for these people to go.
"If you're homeless at the moment, you, have to go
to a B&B and hostel In Letterkenny. That is an Issue
I would like to see addressed.
Archaic
"I also think there should be an all-party Dáil
committee set up to reform the family courts. They are
archaic. It's something that needs to be addressed
urgently.
"For families, the medical card needs to be extended
to all children, that would be a great help. Things like
asthma should be recognised as a long-term illness,
medicines cost a fortune for things like that.
"Health is a big deal. I think Its scandalous that
in a county the size of Donegal, there Is only one
General Hospital. I would hope there wood be another
hospital In the south of the county, or at least open up
the community hospitals to treat accident and emergency
cases, in places like Killybegs, Dungloe and Donegal town.
"We're coming up to the final hurdle now. I'd hope
to be finished by Tuesday, then maybe go on a cavalcade
and remind everyone before Friday," says Gwen.
For Gwen, Friday may be the start of a Dáil career. For
Tom Gildea, it will be his last day. Both are looking
forward to the day, and to seeing if the hard work has
paid off.

"Cup o'Tae"
exceeds all expectations
|
"The Master and one of
his star pupils" - John "the tae"
Gallagher, and Eithne Gallagher, entertaining the crowd
in the Greenhouse on Friday night last.
|
|
The "Cup o' Tae" Music
Festival in Ardara last weekend took place in a relaxed
and appreciative atmosphere. The organising committee
were delighted with the success of the festival.
Musicians from all over the country came to the small
town to take part. All venues were packed. There was no
rowdyism and it was noticeable that people wished to
listen to the music, rather than to do that their way
through it as is sometimes the case.
The workshops in flute and in violin were attended by
people who had traveled from all over Ireland, from
England, Scotland and Germany. There were three fiddle
workshops and two flute workshops, and the groups were of
such a size as to make individual attention possible. The
international attendance at the festival was probably the
result of having placed an announcement for the 'Cup o'
Tae' on the worldwide web, and another in the "Music
Magazine", a publication which is widely read by
musicians.
John the Tae, in whose honour the festival was named,
played his violin in the Greenhouse on the Friday
evening, when a corner, in memory of Josie the Post,
another well-known Ardara violinist, was unveiled. Over
the years, John's fiddle-playing has lost none of its
wonderful quality, as Ciaran MacMahuna verified. John
also played in the Sunday night concert in the Nesbitt
Arms Hotel, at which his playing provoked thunderous
applause and a standing ovation. Stephen Bennett
presented a portrait of John the Tae to this great violin
player as a souvenir of the festival, and his wife,
Annie, received a lovely big bouquet of flowers. John
also played in Teague's Bar fairly often during the
weekend, being frequently accompanied by his young
student and neighbour, Aithne Gallagher, and also by his
grandnephew, Derek McGinley, both of whom are
accomplished violin players. |
|
"Have a wee drop of this
John, and never mind them and their cups of tae" -
Ninety-three-year-old Barney McNelis offering his old pal
John "The Tae", some of the refreshments during
the session in the Greenhouse Bar, on Friday night with
well known broadcaster, Ciaran MacMathuna, in the corner.
|
The documentary, which traced John's musical success
over his lifetime to date, was carefully and humorously
narrated by Seamus Gallagher in the Heritage Centre on
Saturday evening, with the visual aids of an overhead
projector, and a video screen. This evening's event was
followed by a concert, which had to be re-located in the
Nesbitt Arms, due to the number of people who wished to
attend it.
During the Friday concert programme of musicians,
storytellers, and poetry, too numerous to be named here,
a presentation of a picture was made by the artist,
Stephen Bennett, to another prestigious visitor to the
festival, Ciaran MacMahuna. The picture was a portrait in
black and white of the musical celebrity himself. |
|
After the Saturday night concert, some of
the young musicians attending the workshops were
delighted to be invited to join Vincent Campbell to join
in his 'session'. The musicians of the Campbell family
had made their musical contribution to the festival a
very personal one. Before playing a tune, they explained,
"I got this tune from so and so." The audience
then felt the value of this music being so carefully
preserved by passing it from one musician to another, and
now being performed for them.
The town of Ardara was packed for the duration of the
weekend, and accommodation was also fully booked. The
townspeople themselves felt that the weekend had been a
truly lovely and memorable one.

The Late John
McGill.
After a brief illness, the death of John McGill,
Leaconnell, occurred in Letterkenny Hospital, and the
funeral took place at the Church of the Holy Family,
Ardara, on Tuesday April the 9th. Over eighty years of
age at his death, John was raised in the townland of
Leaconnell but emigrated to the U.S. in his mid-twenties.
He lived in New York, and earned his living by turning
his hand to many of the skills involved in the building
trade. He married there and had two children. On his
retirement, he returned to his family home in Leaconnell,
and lived with his brother, Peter. John was a very tidy
man and he enjoyed an active retirement doing D.I.Y. work
around the house and garden. He was a kind friendly man
who enjoyed a spot of craíc with friends and neighbours.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret McGill, U.S., his
two children, John and Margaret, U.S., and his brother,
Peter McGill, Leaconnell, to whom the sympathy of the
community is extended.

Pat and Breda Boyle, after returning from their travels,
were somewhat bemused to receive a Christmas card on the
18th of April. It had been posted in Dortmund on the 7th
of December last, and their Ardara address had been
clearly type-written. Why then had it been sent to
Indonesia? Pat wondered, and then to how many other
places, before finally arriving in Ardara? Ah well, Pat,
better late than never! A traditional music festival with
a cup o' tae would be the very thing to put us on the map!
