UNSTOPPABLE - St.Eunan's powers past Ardara's Eamon Doherty

Revenge for St.Eunan's as they power past Ardara
By Tom O'Donnell

St. Eunan's ................. 1-12
Ardara .......................... 2-4

St.Eunan's powered past Ardara with a power packed second half display to win the crucial home leg game in this crunch first round first leg senior championship tie in O'Donnell Park.

Yet it all looked so different in the opening exchanges as Ardara without Damien Diver - out through injury, (though he did make an appearance in the second half) - got off to a lightning start with new boy Lee Watters cracking the ball to the back of Tony Blake's net on two minutes.

Playing with all the style and panache that they conjured up in last years county final Ardara ran the home side ragged in the opening minutes and were 1-2 to 0-1 up inside thirteen minutes.

But from the moment Charlie Mulgrew took remedial action in the middle of the second quarter St.Eunan's were a different side.

Ardara showed five changes in personnel from last years clash - Kenneth Doherty taking over from Shaun Whyte at corner back, John Herron getting the nod ahead of Martin McShane at wing back and Lee Watters and Stephen McHugh replacing Damien Diver and Conal Doherty. And while county ace Diver was introduced early in the second half, he was still clearly not fully recovered from a leg injury picked up in a league match seven days earlier.

Recovering from their shaky start St.Eunan's had the champions very much in their sights at half time as they trailed Ardara 0-6 to Ardara's 2-3, Don Early bagging the second Ardara goal seconds after a Eunan's substituition.

However from the moment St.Eunan's smashed the ball past astranded Coner Curran seven minutes into the new half there was only going to be one winner. There was no way back for Ardara who only scored once in the second half Peter McHugh finding the target a minute from full-time.

Scorers: Don Earley (1-1), Lee Watters (1-0), Peter McHugh (0-2), Jonathan Boyle (0-1F), Stephen McHugh (0-1)

Team: Conner Curran, Kenneth Doherty, Eamon Doherty, Joe Doherty, Kevin Byrne, Brendan Boyle, Johnny Herron, Michael Doherty, Francis Diver, Fergal Heena, Peter McHugh, Lee Watters, Don Earley, Jonathan Boyle, Stephen McHugh.
Subs: Damian Diver for E.Diver 38 mins, Stephen Gildea for J.Herron, Aodh Brennan for M.Doherty 58 min. inj.

St. Eunan's and Ardara meet in match of the day
By Tom Comack

The race for the Donegal Democrat sponsored senior club championship gets under way this weekend with eight first round first leg games down for decision.

Without question the top game of the weekend is the clash of reigning champions Ardara and the previous year's Dr.Maguire Cup winners St.Eunan's - a repeat of last year's county final.

New Ardara manager, Patrick Gallagher, will look to county men Eamon Doherty, Damien Diver and Michael Doherty to prove last year's win was no flash in the pan.

GAA CLUB FLOTTO

The Ardara GAA Club Flotto is the Clubs main source of funding. This money extensively spent in Pitch Development and in underage structures particularly in the transport of the children to and from matches. The work done by the Club is justified in that our U-10 Team of last year won every game they played, a total of 52 games winning every blitz defeating seven County Champions in the process.

Our Senior Team won the Double last year - first time in the Clubs history the League and Championship Cups came to Ardara in the one year. The work being carried out in the development of our sports grounds at Pearse Memorial have been acknowledged in that the Club won the A.I.B. County Club Award presented to long time Club servant Columba Diver at a Gala Function in Croke Park in January, 2001.

We can safely say the Club sees its funding well. Those former members of the Parish being abroad or indeed anyone can participate in the Club Flotto draw each Saturday night by joining as follows:

1. Select any four numbers between 1 and 24 inclusive i.e. 7, 9, 19 and 23.
This would then be your numbers for the year or whenever you advise us you wish
to change the numbers.

2. The numbers selected each Saturday night will be on this website on Monday.

3. If you win we will forward the prize money to the address given to us by you.

4. Each set of four numbers costs £1.00. i.e. if you select two sets of four numbers we would require £2.00 x 52 weeks = £104.00 for the year.

5. Payments should be made to the Treasurer, Stephen McCahill, Ardara GAA Club,
Beagh, Ardara, Co. Donegal or to the GAA Club Account at:
Ulster Bank - Ardara
Account No - 01010013      Sort Code - 98-51-20

6. Presently, our Jackpot stands at £1,300.00 this Saturday 26th May. Our jackpot initially starts at £1,000.00 rising each week by £100.00 until win. Our last jackpot reached £4,300.00 and was won on Saturday 7th April, 2001, by a local student and a playing member of the Senior Team in Lee Watters.

C.L.G. Ard An Ratha thanks you in advance for your participation.

Comortas Peil Na Gaeltachta sinisir

An Clochán Liath ............... 1-14
Ard an Ratha ....................... 0-9

Dungloe rounded off a great weekend for the club with a comprehensive win over county champions Ardara to capture the clubs second county Gaeltacht title.

Despite the fact that both sides were short their county players, Dungloe minus Tony Boyle, Raymond and Adrian Sweeney and Ardara minus Damien Diver and the Doherty brothers Eamonn and Michael.

Having defeated Kilcar in Sunday evenings semi final the Rosses side came out all guns blazing against an Ardara outfit that had just pipped hosts Glenfin in their semi final.

No way through for Ardara
as Dungloe block the path.

Breaking from the blocks in whirlwind fashion they blitzed the champions in the opening half and were 1-8 to Ardara's 0-3 in front at half-time.

Ardara regrouped at half time and had cut the margin to six, with three quick Jonathan Boyle pointed frees.

Dungloe on the attack as
Peter McHugh, Ardara gives chase.

However, having taken Ardara's best punches Dungloe finished with a flourish to run out deserving winners.

It was not all disapointment for Ardara as both teams are going through to the All Ireland series of the competition which is in the South Kerry Gaeltacht on the June Bank Holiday weekend.

ARDARA ..................... 2-11
ST.NAULS .................... 0-9

This was Ardara's poorest performance to date in the league, although in their defence they were missing a number of regulars from their senior squad.

Visitors St.Nauls led 0-6 to 1-1 after a first half where both sides aquandered chances and fluid football was uncommon.

Ardara were out of sorts for the opening 20 minutes but a fine finish to the net by Jonathan Boyle hinted at their real potential - Jonathan going on to inflict serious scoring pain.

St. Nauls were ahead 0-4 to 0-1 after 16 minutes, Peter McHugh hitting the early Ardara point.

The first half ended 0-6 to 1-1 in St.Nauls favour. The inclusion of Damien Diver, Kenneth Doherty and Connor O'Donnell saw Ardara improve, Diver playing well when introduced with 15 minutes left.

Francis Diver also had much to do with the Ardara revival, getting on top in midfield. With six minutes left St.Nauls scored their final point to leave their side one point adrift, 0-9 to 1-7 but a second Jonathan Boyle goal and points from Boyle, Diver and Lee Watters (two) gave Ardara more league points.

Scorers for Ardara
Jonathan Boyle 2-4, Lee Watters 0-2, Peter McHugh, Michael Doherty, Fergal Heena, Stephen McHugh and Damien Diver 0-1 each.
