IMPORTANCE OF SILENCE
One aspect that we must be more committed to fostering in our communities is the experience of silence. We need silence if we are to accept in our hearts the full resonance of the voice of the Holy Spirit and to unite our personal prayer more closely to the Word of God and the public voice of the Church. In a society that lives at an increasingly frenetic pace, often disorientated by noise and overwhelmed by the ephemeral, it is vital to rediscover the value of silence. It is no accident that even outside Christian worship, practices of meditation stressing recollection are becoming increasingly popular. Why not boldly create a specific training in silence within the proper context of the Christian experience? Let us look to the example of Jesus, who rose and went out to a lonely place, and there he prayed(Mk1:35). The liturgy, with all its different moments and signs, cannot neglect the sign of silence.
(Pope John Paul 11)
