SEASON OF LENT

Lent commences next Wedns. It is a time to check in what direction we are going. Three signposts are given to us to find the right road or to ensure that we stay on the right road.

These are: PRAYER, FASTING, ALMSGIVING.

These signposts are as ancient as Christianity itself.

LENT IN OUR PARISH

  1. There is in this Parish a strong tradition of participation in daily mass during Lent. It is hoped that this tradition will continue this year. Starting on Ash Wednesday Masses for Lent will be at 7.45am, 9.30am and 7.30pm Monday to Friday.
  2. Girley weekly Mass will be on Friday at 7.30pm
  3. Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament continues Monday to Friday 8am-8pm
  4. Fasting is encouraged especially on the Fridays of Lent.

ASH WEDNESDAY MASSES:

Masses at 7.45am, 9.30am and 7.30pm. Girley 8pm. Ashes blessed and distributed at all Masses.

TROCAIRE BOXES

In 1963 the richest 20% of people shared 70% of the wealth of the planet between them. By the year 2002 this has risen to over 88%. 95 % of people with HIV/AIDS live in the developing world yet it has only 7% of the world’s health expenditure. During Lent we will be outlining some of the injustices of the Third World and will cite the examples of the marginalised people of Guatemala and Cambodia.

If your home does not receive a Trocaire Lenten Box, kindly contact the Parish Office (40213)

TROCAIRE

The focus of the Lenten Campaign this year is on the plight of the Maya people of Guatemala – one of the most ancient cultures in the world. Despite making up a majority of the population of their country, they have been marginalised and denied the basic rights that all people should enjoy. They have lost their lands, have been denied a voice in the running of their country and have been the victims of an attempted genocide in the 1980’s. The images of the Lenten box this year tell the story of this people.

If your home does not receive a Trocaire Lenten Box, kindly contact the Parish Office (40213)

INTERIOR OF ST COLMCILLE’S CHURCH

The Parish Pastoral Council has discussed what improvements can be made to our Church building to make it an even more welcoming and prayerful place. It has decided to get the opinion of parishioners through a questionnaire that will be distributed at Masses on the weekend of Sunday 30th of March (and through the post-primary schools).

Three options will be presented

  1. Put in more stained glass windows. Paint and decorate the Church
  2. Change the layout of the interior of the Church (this option would require major fundraising)

(3) Leave things as they are
