TROCAIRE

The story of Leonilla, a girl in Rwanda, Leonilla Ingabire is twenty years old and her son Fiacre is just two. Leonilla lost most of her family during the genocide in 1994.

This is her story -
In 1994 I was 10 years old. My family and I were hiding in the local church for safety. There were many other families with us. Outside the attackers began throwing grenades into the church, killing many people and forcing us outside. I ran into the gardens and was hiding but some attackers found me. They gave me a hoe and a pickaxe and told me to dig a hole that was to be my grave. They were beating me with machetes and shouting at me. A woman came along and tried to stop them. She told them I was not from this village and should be sent home. They let me go but told me to go back to my own village where I would be killed by my neighbours. (More next week)

If you did not receive a Trocaire Box, some boxes are available in the front porch of the Church or kindly contact the Parish Office.

TROCAIRE

Continuing the story of Leonilla from Rwanda.

After the genocide Leonilla had terrible feelings of isolation and sadness and was not able to talk to anyone. These feelings continued for years. She talked to a friend who had been through counselling. Leonilla then decided to go along to ARCT (Association of Rwanda Trauma Counsellors) and to seek help with her problems and to make her feel better. Leonilla has attended three sessions and already she feels like a weight has been lifted from her and that there is some hope for the future. She is only beginning the counselling and still cannot talk about many of the events that she witnessed. She finds it particularly hard to talk about the killing of her own family, which she saw as a small girl.
Leonilla is the girl pictured skipping on the Trocaire Box. We wish her well for the future.

Trocaire Boxes are available in the front porch of the church.

    TROCAIRE

    Crisis in Sudan

Trócaire has expressed concern at the deteriorating humanitarian situation created by the recent upsurge in fighting in the Darfur region of western Sudan. Hundreds of thousands of people have now been forced to flee their homes. Sudanese state forces and government-backed militias have been involved in joint attacks on civilians, in which villages have been bombed from the air, and then attacked and burned on the ground. Besides those directly killed gross human rights violations such as rape are being committed, and entire villages are being emptied.

Trócaire is calling on the Irish government to use its role as holder of the EU presidency to raise this issue internationally.
