Review of the Future DJ act by Behaviour

- By RobertEarly

The Future DJ concept is the latest evolutionary stage in dance music DJing. It incorporates elements of traditional DJing combined with a live performance, midi-synced and mixed with the underlying pre-recorded tracks. The result is a hybrid DJ/live dance act, which is totally new concept to the dance music scene. The Future DJ live act is currently in training, and involves three members of the Impulsive team, namely Dean Sherry, Darren Flynn and Tony Dexter.

Vocalist Lisa Kendrick will also feature in some of the act, as will other Impulsive DJs for some of the bigger shows. A major launch party is being planned, with nationwide and international tours following soon after.

The crew will be at the 'DJ Culture' show in Manchester in the Summer of 1998 to demonstrate this new dynamic and futuristic act.

The three masterfully create a massive soundscape from the broad array of equipment at their disposal, virtually transforming even recognisable dance tracks into new remixes, ever-changing and always different. It allows the performers to work and respond to the crowd much more than a pure vinyl DJ can, instantly inserting basslines, beats and riffs in response to the crowd. It transforms the largely passive art of DJing into a live and interactive set, as the overlaid sounds are largely instantaneous, and not set and constrained by the use of a sequencer.

The hardware list employed reads as follows:

The key to the performance is the Red Sound voyager MIDI sync boxes, which provide the interface between the pre-recorded analogue vinyl and the digital live instruments. These units intelligently track the beat generated by the record decks and in turn trigger the MIDI instruments.

The three work as a team, mixing off each other's decks, and introducing live sounds as required. The visual impact of the three performers working with such a variety of equipment also cannot be understated. A lone DJ is often lost on larger venues' stages, whereas the Future DJ performers constantly working with both decks and live sounds is a visually stunning experience.

All three members are distinguished DJs in their own right, but when combined in this way go far beyond any simple DJ set ever can, much more than a simple mix or even a pure live performance. Pounding progressive tracks, hard-edged break-beats, mindblowing breakdowns, and stomping beats, all with that extra 100%.

Performer meets DJ, mixing meets live production, all with the versatility and expertise that only Impulsive know how. The result is real-time live remixing!

The music media is currently alight with the news of the concept and are clamouring to be the first to break the latest big revolution in the scene. Impulsive are not bowing to the pressure to launch the act before every aspect is thoroughly perfected, but rehearsals are at an advanced stage and a launch date will be set very soon.

Impulsive will be setting fire to a dancefloor near you, very soon.
