Albatros D.Va
Albatros started development on the D.V in 1917 as an improved D.III.
The D.V entered service in May 1917 and was superseded by the D.Va soon
after. There were 1,000 D.Vs and D.Vas in service by May 1918 but the aircraft
was unable to live up to the task it was designed for: stopping Allied air
activity. They suffered heavy losses from both enemy action and structural
failure of the lower wing.
This aircraft hates to dive... so much so that it will suffer structural
failure at speeds above 160mph. It has poor acceleration and a low maximum
level speed so it is not a B'n'Z type at all. A good roll rate will allow
it to 'barrel-roll-drag' a bogey but that's not much use if you are on your
own. The climb rate is appalling so it is not a Zeppelin interceptor by
any stretch of the imagination. The only real advantages it has in a fight
are the 2 x 7.92 LMG 08/15 MG Spandaus, and it's good low speed handling...
but that is just not enough against the Camel. All other planes, bar the
CLII, can engage and disengage at will from a fight with a D.Va, by either
diving, climbing, or even just plain accelerating away in level flight.
