Boxing tournament.

Grangecon boxing club hosted The Jim Byrne Memorial Tournament in the club hall
on Sat March 1st. A large attendance saw the local club take ten of the twelve bouts
against strong competition. The huge audience were treated to a great night's
entertainment and the club were said to be very pleased with the support they
received.
The club now has many talented boxers as indicated by their achievement
in their home tournament but they are also doing very well in other venues. Sean
Lawlor and Paddy Walsh both had decisive wins in the Blessington tournament
recently while Ross Hickey was victorious in the Ireland v England cadets
international in Basingstoke last weekend. Ross Hickey, Paddy Walsh and Paul
Nolan are competing in the Leinster finals this weekend and we wish them success
in their efforts.

Local artist at Chelsea Flower Show

A dream will become reality when a local artist showcases his work at the 2003 Chelsea Flower Show next month. Grangecon based sculptor Rupert Till will have his work on show at the Hasmead Octopus garden in the prestigious show. The garden's inspiritation, the octopus, is being created by Rupert Till. With it's six foot long tentacles and three foot wide body, the octopus will be the focal point of the Hasmead Octopus Garden. The octopus will be galvanised in molten zinc to give it a shiny finish which will dull down on  exposure to the elements.
Till is also creating a nine metre long marine frieze as a border for the garden - an alternative to the traditional trellis work often used in domestic gardens. Using his expertise and the individuality of his methods, Rupert has designed unique sculptural pieces to enhance the recreation of three fragile marine environments - a coral garden, shallow reef, and an eel garden - in terrestrial form.
The Chelsea Flower Show takes place from May 20 to 23.

New Grangecon bus route.

A new bus route serving
Grangecon has just commenced service. This route connects
Dunlavin to Baltinglass via Rathsallagh and Grangecon. It is timed to link up with the
Baltinglass - Dublin daily bus service. There is also a bus from Dunlavin to Blessington and
linking up with the 65 Dublin Bus service as well as a Dunlavin - Newbridge route.
This new service is part of a Government sponsored initiative to bring public transport to
rural areas not currently catered for by existing services. Bus passes are accepted and persons requiring to be picked up at their homes can be catered for by prior arrangement. This service's continuation into the future or indeed it's expansion will depend on usage as limited funds are available to finance such services. The service may be extended to include a monthly service to the Square Shopping Centre in Tallaght if there is sufficient demand.
The Baltinglass bus leaves Dunlavin each Friday at 10:00, travelling via
Rathsallagh and Grangecon and arrives in Baltinglass at 10:40 and returns at 2:10 PM. The Blessington service operates on Mondays, departing from Dunlavin at 9:30 AM and returning at 5:00 PM while the Saturday Newbridge service departs at 10:30 and returns at 3 PM.
If you require to be picked up at your home, or for further information, contact Dermot Allen on 087 2516623.

First Communion.

Nine children received First Communion in Grangecon on Sunday May 11th 2003.
All the children participated in the ceremony and the school choir did the singing ably assisted by the large congregation. Fr Shelly CC celebrated the Mass. Afterwards, tokens of appreciation were presented to all who assisted in the preparations for the big day and they were well deserved, as the children were a credit to those involved.
The nine were:

Brendan Kinsella, Adam Fleming, Alan Norton, Laurence Cullen, Shannon Reid,
Conor Foley, Joshua Glass, Dylan Brown and Mark Humphries.

Grangecon population growing.

The most recent population figures released by the government show that the population of Grangecon, in common with mast parts of Co. Wicklow, is on the increase.
The census conducted last year shows our population at 399, up 26 on the previous count in 1996. This represents an increase of 7% over the six year period. The figure of 399 breaks down between male and female as follows. 205 males and 194 females. This may seem to indicate an inaccuracy in the estimate of population on our index page (about Grangecon) but the author of that piece assures us that that number referred to the village only while the census figure refers to the electoral area of "The Grange".

Boxing Champ.

Grangecon Boxing Club member Ross Hickey has just landed another prestigious
boxing title to his already impressive collection. At the national stadium last weekend
Ross landed the All Ireland Junior Championship in his weight category, which is 48
Kilos.
To win this title is a magnificent achievement for Ross and for the people
involved in coaching and training at Grangecon Boxing Club. A title of this stature does
not come easily but has to be earned through hard work and dedication not to mention a
large measure of talent
We wish to extend our congratulations to Ross and the club and no doubt
we will see his name in the news again, such is his talent in the boxing ring.
