Recent Events

Many thanks to all those who supported our recent Casino Night. The reports are good from everyone who attended - many thanks go to our excellent sponsors who pulled out all the stops: in the end we had almost 30 top-class prizes from limited edition prints and a handcrafted walnut mirror to a day’s hunting with the Fermanagh Harriers.

The top prize of a £600 trip to Paris was won by Geraldine Boyle of Silver Spurs Riding Club in Carrickmacross. As the Silver Spurs club made up half of the congregation, in my opinion, there couldn’t have been a more worthy winner. Sincere thanks go to Tony Crofton and Oinri Jackson for organising the event and selling over half the tickets for the event.

It was interesting to note how few of our Scheme participants actually supported the event: the Legend of the Hungry Horseman lives on, apparently.

There will be no Horse Breeders class at Castleblayney Show this year, and we apologise to anyone who had intended to support the class: its a pity you didn’t do so in the last few years, because the low entries in previous years has caused us to discontinue the event.

Our Marketing Committee has finally awarded the tender to conplete a marketing plan for our horses: expect news of this at the AGM at the end of the year. Any thoughts you might have on how our horses should be marketed are welcome - you have my number, as the man says.

You may be interested to know that up to the of April, the Breaking & Schooling Scheme had cost the NEHB over £10,500. Grant aid on this amount came to £6,700, so we do urgently need your support to keep the show on the road.

DATES FOR WILLIAM MICKLEM

We have decided to use some of our LEADER Training grant to bring up a top class Trainer to teach people how to be more than a passenger on a horse: how to teach a young horse his job. William Micklem, one of the best qualified horsemen in Ireland, will be at your service at Carricmacross School of Equitation all day on the following dates:

Sept 21,22, 28,29
Oct. 12,13 26.27
Nov. 2,3

This is a golden opportunity to work through any training problems you are experiencing with a horse, or to get a bot of help in bringing him on to the next level.

Anyone interested in availing of this training should contact me immediately - places are strictly limited so that you will receive individual tuition. And no, you don’t have to be a Professional to come along with a horse - just an open-minded , competent rider.

In addition to the hands on help, there will be theory sessions on the following evenings, starting at 9pm:
Sept 21, 28
Oct. 12, 26
Nov. 2

Everyone is welcome at these sessions, which will include videos, talks by guest speakers and question time.

Rarely do we get an opportunity to advance our knowledge under such expert guidance, so do make every effort to get to at least one of the sessions - even if you don’t ride yourself, it’s a good idea to learn what a good trainer should be able to do - that way you’ll be in a position to judge when your horse is being ruined by one of the many full-time "Trainers" (and I use the word loosely) around the country, and to appreciate the hard work of a decent rider.

Prices are as follows:

Members: £20 per session, or £80 for a course of 5 lessons
Non-Members: £30 per session, or £120 for a course of 5 lessons

Trainers on the LEADER Scheme get a special deal of £5 per session. Entry to the evening sessions will be £3 for Members, £5 for Non-Members.

At the end of the course, certificates will be awarded, which we hope to develop into a qualification that owners can look for when choosing a trainer for their young horses.

New Cross-Country Course

Johnny Vance is just finishing an impressive cross counrry course around his land in Clones . Each obstacle incorporates three different heights of fence, so even the most chicken hearted is catered for. The course will be open to the public in early September, so if you want to try somewhere new, ring Johnny on 047 51176. Best of luck to him, and to the test pilot for the Water Fence.

Dear Member,

Please support our Lotto Syndicate: it could win you a Million, it gives you 100 lines in every Lotto draw for the price of 2 (yes, you did read that right)
