I am currently chairman of the Silver Spurs Riding Club. I'll be adding a section on this soon. I am about to build a yard at a farm I bought last autumn. All thoughts on design would be appreciated. Click here to view photos of my horses The North Eastern Horse Breeders was formed over ten years ago, with the aim of raising the standards of horse production in Ireland, especially in the north east, where most of our members live. They run a number of information events during the year, aimed at increasing horse owners' knowledge of horse management. Until spring 2002, I produced a quarterly newsletter, updating members on their activities, and keeping them abreast of issues which affect them. Articles written by me for these are available on this site. Over the past few years, the fortunes of the Irish Horse have taken a turn for the worse in the sales ring, and many of our breeders now operate at a loss. In response to this, I devised a Framework Strategy for the Development of the Horse Industry in the Border Region, which outlined the measures which should be taken to reverse this unhealthy state. This led to my spearheading a ground-breaking Breaking & Schooling Incentive Scheme, which was funded by Cavan Monaghan LEADER and ran in 1999 and 2000 until the then LEADER II programme finished. The Equine MOT which developed from this Scheme aimed to produce quality horses for the leisure riding market, and to guarantee their suitability to the prospective customer. You can find out more about this, the Equine MOT Test, on this site. Since the cessation of grant aid in 2000, the ideas first tried in the Equine MOT have been refined and reproduced as a Marketing Strategy, which outlines how the Scheme might continue on a commercial basis. This was launched at the NEHB's Annual General Meeting in December 2001, and now awaits implementation.
