Exercise 1

Players A and B are attackers, with a ball. Player C is a defender.

On the coach’s whistle Players A and B sprint down the court passing a ball between them. Player C chases and tries to stop them scoring.

Variations :

  • Player C starts from 3m behind Players A and B.
  • Player C starts from 3m in front of Players A and B
  • Coach whistles and passes ball to goalkeeper who does long throw to either A or B who have started sprinting on fast break. Player C chases trying to intercept.

Exercise 2

Players A, B and C position themselves on the 6m line and practice defensive moves - out and back to 9m line.

Coach throws the ball to the goalkeeper :

  1. Players B and C sprint up court on fast break,
  2. Player A moves to wing position and receives a pass from the goalkeeper,
  3. Player A gives long pass to either Player B or Player C who scores

Variation :

After Player A passes the ball he sprints up the court to take a return pass from Player B or C and scores.

Repeat the drill with next three players.

Exercise 3

Players A, B and C position themselves on the 6m line and practice defensive moves - out and back to 9m line.

Coach throws the ball to the goalkeeper :

  • Players B and C sprint up the right hand side of the court on a fast break,
  • Player A sprints up left hand side of court,
  • Goalkeeper gives long pass to Player B who then passes to Player C.
  • Player C passes to Player A who scores

Repeat the drill with next three players. Alternate between right and left hand sides of court.
